Do you diagnosis with a remote fuel container and fresh gas. When you get it sorted, address the old fuel and fuel system. I would use a cheap pump to remove the old fuel to negate any risk to the new pump with old fuel. Overly cautious, yes! Here in Washington, we can take 5 gallons of gas to the recycle station per day. Get your wife and buddies in on it and it could be done in a day. After the fuel is gone, drop the tanks, clean them if possible and replacethe sock filters, replaced ALL of the fuel lines and install your new fuel pump by your favored design. I personally would install the new pump after the tank switching solenoid and use an oil pressure switch in the circuit. I also put steel lines on the top of the tank so dropping them is no longer necessary to replace the lines.
