I believe that one side will pull out, but I don't remember
which side.

The Dr. side will "just pull out" if you remove the small retaining
nut. The pass. side will "just pull out" if the brace is removed. I was
sort of surprised too. I guess it's because most of the Chevy & Ford
axles have either internal C-clips or bearing retainers holding the
axles into the final drive.
