Awning removal

Since it looks like the deep freeze is getting turned off this weekend, I’m about to dive into removing the awnings and scuffing it up for paint.

It’s a zip Dee.

I know I need to unload the spring on the awning.

Recommendations and suggestions appreciated.

The only paint that mine has is the letters "Zip Dee". The rest is polished
stainless steel or aluminum.

anyhow- get some tall friends, 2 of them. or a short 1 like me, and a small step ladder. get a 5 or 6 foot step ladder by the rear arm head.
Have the two of them hold onto the awning while it is extended, and carefully unbolt the lower rear arm bolt. You use the leverage of that long arm
to to un-wind(or wind). the 5-6 foot step ladder will allow you to keep the leverage as the arm turns over the top. It is not difficult, but be
careful NOT to let go of that arm and remain under control. The 2 friends will stable the awning tube so you can control the arm. about 10 turns.

once unspun, you can take the front lower bolt off the coach, and the whole awning should slide out of the awning rail towards the rear usually.
Sometimes it can be a bugger- if the awning rail is bent.

the awning rail is usually pop riveted to the coach. You will have to decide if you want to drill that all out and re-do it after paint, or just
paint around, or actually paint the awning rail itself.

Dolph good luck with the paint job the instructions you received for the zip Dee are close to the opposite of installing one ..which i can attest to
as I installed our zip Dee in similar fashion. Do be careful in sliding awning out of the track of the aluminum protector portion as you can easily
Bend that,and a little WD-40 or their dry lub will go a long way to make it slide off easier. Are you going to do a custom paint job on your coach or
try to keep it original?
I ain't going to paint it in your toy box or someplace else?

Don't use wd40, it will attract dust and dirt which will lock up the sllde. You can figure out how I know. The zipdee folks explained to me to use silicone spray to get it apart and keep it working smoothly. Didn't say a word about dry lube product, just told to use silicone spray. Worked; still works.

Good point on the straight WD-40, however their dry lube that I was mentioning and have used,is PTFE that does not attract dust or grime. And the
other post is right and be careful about getting any of it on the panels without degreasing it off before painting!

I find I can knock better that half the cost of paint off if I take the coach to the painter already prepped. Ding n scrape removal, roof
cleanup/seal and window removal or masking are easy to do albeit time consuming. When you're paying 100 - 125 an hour, it's worth your time to do the
prep. It's worth the money to have a competent painter actually shoot it.
Note that you will get a non - warranty paint job this way. No shop will warrant their paint over your prep. Mostly because poor prep is the major
cause of paint problems.
