Hi

Can someone set this poor poor boy back on the right path. I have been
to 5 auto salvage yards in the last 2 days. Looked at perhaps 20 cars
that should have had electric vacuum pumps-- but none were present and
what's worse - they all looked like there was never a vacuum pump in
the car.

If I understand correctly the candidates are things like
Buick ....82-Skyhawk-J 82-85-Shylark-X
Cadillac .82 Cimmaron
Chevy ....84-86-celebrity-A 82-caprice-B 82-Cavalier
82-85-Citation-X
Olds......86-Cierra-A 82-Firenza-J 82-84-Omega-X
Pontiac...85-86-6000 82-J2000 82-84-Phoenix-X

I believe that the 4 cylinder with A/C were the ones to look for (not
the V6 models). --- Hmmmm found a bunch -- but no pump --in fact
looking at the brake booster tank- there is no provision for other
than a rubber hose straight to the intake manifold. What am I
missing here -- I looked on the driver side fender for the pump.

I did manage to find a couple of old (70's) Caddies that had a vacuum
pump (the vacuum control switch seems to be mounted in the brake
booster canister)
These pumps only have 2 wires on them.

Am I right in assuming that the later vacuum pump had the switch built
in and had 4 wires?? Do they look like the old Caddy Vacuum pumps.
Yes, I know that old Caddies also had compressor pumps for the air
ride -- and I certainly can tell them apart from vacuum pumps.

I too have been unable to locate a vacuum pump. I hear on the EV-list
that they are also on some Volvo models. I found a number of York AC
pumps for air-compressors though.

Your lookin at the right cars alright Pete. Take out the battery and there
should be 3 little bolts in the bottom of the tray. They take a 10mm
wrench to loosen. They hold up the vac pump that is mounted underneath.

I found one on a '82 Cimmeron (that was bured under another car) the other
day and the brakes still had vacume on em! Things are more expensive in a
small town I guess. I paid $35 for it and all the plumbing, filter, and
switches.

Hope this helps
