Rostra (
http://www.rostra.com) manufacturers a slick replacement cruise
control, sold under the Audiovox brand name. I believe Duane Simmons, who's
on the GMCnet, sells this system along with an installation manual specific
to the GMC. They have an all electric unit, which means you can do away
with your original system components and all its attendant spaghetti of
vacuum lines. This cleans up the engine compartment nicely.
Rostra has available three different controllers for the system: pad, joy
stick, and turn signal lever. It has resume, accelerate, and coast
functions that the original does not. Sure is nice to tap speed up or down
in one mph increments.
I replaced my original cruise with the Rostra using the turn signal lever
controller. Had trouble with all the functions, except on/off. Worked with
Rostra on trouble shooting and eventually found a problem with the
controller after performing the controller diagnostic check. Replaced the
controller and it works fine now.
I also have created an installation manual (available in MS Word format if
you need it) based on my experiences with the installation. The install
manual Rostra includes in their kit, attempts to cover installation in ALL
vehicles, and does no justice to any.

The January 1994 issue of Motorhome Marketplace has the details of what Gary
did when he changed the cruise control on our coach. We now have the
tilt/telescopic column with the resume cruise control on the column, and he
also moved the headlight dimmer switch to the column. Makes it very
comfortable for either of us to drive.
