Auto Trans

I have not moved my 1973 GMC for 4 years and on start up it would not move forward or reverse. After a few minutes it moved but would not climb over a
lip of concrete about 2 inches high. Eventually it climbed with a run up. The trans oil is at correct level. Any ideas on what the problem may be?

Check the brake linings may be corroded to the drums.

I had a vehicle like that. It would only move once the trans warmed up and the Internal seals softened. A bottle of Trans-X helped rejuvenate the seals enough to work well again, but took a week or so to kick in. Like most cures in a bottle, it’s a temporary measure I suppose.

By the return replies what I have encounted with my transmission problen it is not very common. I thought I would get a lot of suggestions on what the
problem might be.
Definately a trans problem and not brakes as suggested (thank you for that comment anyway as it could well have been a possible problem)

You did check level with engine running in Park right?? If engine OFF it will give you a false reading and will be underfilled in reality.

John, I can not remember at what point I checked the oil level, so I will check again as you suggested and hopefully that is the problem that I
checked at the wrong point. Thanks

Having sat idle for so long i suspect everything in the clutch packs would have been dry and stuck together. Next time you have it running, chock the
wheels and with the engine running put the trans in neutral for a few minutes, that should help pump fluid through the internals...then into reverse
and drive gears, without moving to get stuff freed up. Best case is it gets everything free again, worse case, you'll have to have it rebuilt but
their will be no harm done by doing the what i mentioned.

Hello GMCers:
Just want you all to know that we have a very good Transmission rebuilder in Cedar Park, Tx. (Just 20 miles N W of Austin, Tx.). Speak to Tony (the Manager) at Eagle Transmissions.
He has experience in rebuilding our th 425 trannys, is honest, and reasonably priced (not cheap - but reasonable).
2 Year guarantee on parts and labor and he has access to internal parts as needed - took 2 weeks to get internals from New Jersey for mine..
Eagle Transmissions is a nationwide chain - I am not sure that they all have experience with our trannys like Tony but he said take mine to any of the nationwide shops if I need guarantee work. So it might be worth a call or two - if you have the need and if there is an Eagle Trans store in your area!
Got my 76 Eleganza II back yesterday - drove her for an hour and am very pleased.
Drives fine, shifts fine, and the 2 yr guarantee gives me good confidence.
Good mechanics and specialty rebuilders are getting harder and harder to find - so just wanted to share the above good news!
