Attach Ladder?? second req

I have used this site one time in a effort to find a good way to attach
my ladder to the fiber glass body. Here is my original request:

I am interested in learning a good way to reattach the rear ladder to
the fiberglass body. I have a 78 Royal Transmode. We have enjoyed this
motor home since it was new. That was 120,000 miles and five kids ago.

I just discovered this web site and will probably have lots of questions
as time goes by.

I have read about 125 messages in the last few days including one
response to my request to welcome me aboard. Nothing about attaching my
ladder. Based on what I have read in the Email messages so far, most of
you guys are well informed about your GMC's, certainly much better
mechanics that I am. Someone out there must have an idea.

I wonder if rivets would do the trick?

I used Riv-nuts to redo the ladder support. The are also call inserts.
Essentially they are machine threaded on inside and and available for
different thickness material as well as aluminum and stainless.
You drill a hole that is much larger than the bolt you wil be using, then
use a tool the tightens the nut internal nut. This mushrooms the fastening
and holds it very well in fiberglass. Then when you put in your new bots (
I used SS Allen head cap screws) they will tighten the fitting when you
tighten the bolt. Worked well for the last 8 years.

Dean, I have no idea about what the original ladder attaching system looks
like, and the maintenance manuals and parts book do not show the ladder.
However, it is common practice to use expanding bolts on surfaces that are
"blind" (you can't get to the other side to install the nut). GMC used
something similar to attach the running lights above the windshield and rear
window. These have a nut attached to metal "fingers" that fit through the
hole, but bend as soon as you tighten the screw, becoming larger than the
hole. You can find them at hardware stores. There are probably stainless
steel versions available at boat supply stores.

You might also question your local RV dealer, as many motorhomes now have
fiberglass end caps.
