The propane cylinders that are the subject of the "question-and-answer"
article in the June issue of "Highways" Magazine are so-called "portable
tanks" that are made to different standards than the propane tanks in
our Classic GMCs. The permanently mounted propane tanks in our coaches
are made to American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Standards
and are not involved in the portable propane cylinder controversy that
has been going on for a few years. Even though he is answering questions
pertaining to propane cylinders in 5-wheel trailers; these are still
consider portable tanks, as they are not permanently mounted to the
trailers. They can be removed and taken to a propane supplier for
refilled.
Reread the second paragraph is his answer . He said "During this
transition period, horizontal cylinders were fitted with the same 13/4"
Acme hardware that required filling in the same manner as the ASME tanks
used in motorhomes". His article is not about ASME "tanks"-it is about
propane"cylinders". GMC Motorhome propane tanks are not involved in this
issue so we will have to find something else to worry about.

Chuck - I believe that we all are in total agreement with you on this
issue and interpret the article as you do, but some of us, myself
included, have had to argue with some propane filling stations to get
our tanks filled while on a trip and this will probably get worse
with time. It's not that the GMCnetters are worried whether they
have "tanks" or "cylinders" but whether we'll be able to easily get
them filled when we need propane. I believe that Gene's suggestion
that we try to get an "official" document to carry with us that we
can show to the guy filling the tanks, who may not have the knowledge
that we do regarding ASME vs. DOT, has merit.
