Antifreeze additive refresh

I have heard over the years that the antifreeze, polyethylene glycol, does not go bad or break down. The only problem is the additive packages,
anti-corrosion and pump lube, wear out or are consumed. I have never heard of this being disputed.

Question: Is there a product to refresh the addive package in antifreeze? If so what is the nane(s) of this product. In searching I have not been
able to find an antifreeze additive that does not claim to improve cooling or "make water wetter. I don't need any snake oil, just an additive
refresher.

Atleast 20 years ago, there used to be a waterpump lube additive that also contained supplements for the other additives found in coolants. I can't recall the brand, nor do I recall seeing it on the shelves these days. Honestly though, I haven't looked for it as I believe a fluid change is of benefit to help keep dirt and sediment under control.

If you are using ethelyne glycol anti-freeze mixed with distilled water in
a 50/50 mixture in a clean cooling system, and you have changed and
flushed the system in the last 3 years, I personally would not be
concerned about a failed additive package. But, there are test kits to
confirm the potency if you are concerned. If it fails that test, drain,
flush, and renew your system. Go back in the house and worry if your wife
is planning to kill you for your life insurance policy, or some other
unlikely problem.

Don't bug him it is not the New Year here yet.

Water pump lube is available at my local auto parts store and is cheap. It is especially helpful on vehicles that sit for long periods of time.
After taking out water pump seals on several vehicles that sat for more the 6 months, I started using it. I have not had to replace a water pump on
anything I own since then. It is not the cost of the water pumps (most are life time warranty). It is doing the work to replace it that I hate.

I have 8 vehicles that have water cooled systems. 3 years ago I got tired of keeping track of the ones that needed flushed/changed. I just changed all of them then. It's just simpler that way. So I'm coming up on that task soon. I use this as a way to check over things that aren't covered by oil changes/lube. Oil change/ lube at 3000 miles. I change brake fluid every 6 years. Automatic trans/power steering fluids every 12,000 miles. FD at 24,000. Lubes/filters are cheep. Along time ago I got into the habit of doing prefights. It's a habit that I would highly suggest you do on your GMC before leaving at the start of each day of driving it. YES. I'm a preventative maintenance NUT. I would think just as important as adding new additves, would be removing the spent additives and the new compounds they form. Drain and refil.

Our Cummins Big Cam engines fitted a coolant filter. These came with some additive or additives in them, in concentrations from 1 to 5. Based on a
field test, the tech used the correct filter. Never failed a radiator or a sleeve in one maintained that way. I have seen both failures in those not
so maintained.

The GMC and the toads and Paula's TnC get synthetic oil and a filter every 5K miles or annually in the case of the GMC if it hasn't been that far. So
far, it's worked well.

One way to ensure you went through the critical items on the checklist was the well-known acronym CIGAR TIP. The last thing before takeoff, after all
checklist items were completed, I'd run through CIGAR TIP: C for controls, free and moving properly; I for instruments (including checking the
directional indicator against runway heading and magnetic compass); G was for gas, both quantity and set on correct tank, alternate fuel pump on or
off as appropriate, and also for gear (more on this later); A for altimeter; R for runup--not necessarily to do it again, but to remember if you
really did it during the checklist; T for trim set for takeoff; I was for interior, doors and windows locked; P for propeller set for takeoff.

And assuming you aviated properly and were preparing to descend, GUMPP.

Don't feel bad. After 23 rated years in USAF, CIGAR TIP is new to me too.
Probably because we were so indoctrinated to ALWAYS read our printed
checklists -- even during middle of the night 5 minute scrambles with the
F101B in Air Defense Command. :-)
