It strikes me that we need a list of spare parts and tools that people
should take with them when they travel. Emery once wrote about some spare
distributor parts that he keeps in his coach (I couldn't find the post in
my archives or I would have added them to the list). How about members
expanding this list. If you disagree with something that's added please say
so and give your reasons -- we have to keep in mind the weight and space
limitations when traveling. For example, is the water pump really a good
idea -- too heavy? easily available in most places?

1. Bearing puller kit
2. One set of wheel bearings
3. Spare fan clutch
4. Spare air bag or Ragusa air bag replacement rod
5. Chock blocks
6. Emergency markers
7. Updated Black List
8. Most recent GMC International Membership Roster
9. Parts interchange list
10. Spare water pump
11. Lower or higher temp thermostat

The wheel bearings and fan clutch should be available locally, or could at
least be overnighted to you.

I'd vote for the Ragusa rod - compact and light. Once again, you could get
a bag overnighted to you. Just need to limp to the closest garage,
campground or WalMart.

These three are must have items!

My experience with the GMCMI list has been a little disappointing, but it
doesn't take up much space.

The water pump and thermostat should be available locally, even if you can't
find your favorite, you should at least be able to get one that will work to
get you home. I'd probably carry a spare thermostat gasket along with a
tube of RTV. In a pinch you can remove a bad thermostat and put the housing
back on with just the gasket. Might run a little cool, but it will get you
to the closest garage, campground or WalMart.

Take a look at the GMC Western States web site under Tech Centre
bulletin number 11. There is a very good list of spare odds and ends to
have with one and now with pullers etc available one could add some of
these things as well as mentioned in the previouspost.
