Aluminum in the crossover

Just a word of experience. I had Mondello in Paso Robles fill my crossover
years ago. The heat from my engine melted their filler material and it took
out several valves. They gave me a new intake manifold with different fill
material. No, I don't know/remember what material it was but just a word of
caution. The temperature you have to melt the filler material has to be
substantially hotter than the heat your engine makes.

Most people h a small equation to consider.ave no clue what a motor home
goes through.
Weight is only asmall part . it is the Aerodynamic drag as the Frontal area
is great as acts like a brake all the time as it moves.
Hot rodders and light truck people goof up and also wonder why the engines
in our coaches fail .
I figured it out having had few in the last 35 years.
What seems to work so far is the way our Springfield/Patterson Intake Block
Kit is designed. We provide several weekly .

Some have said that it is Aluminum. Mondello’s material was actually a zinc alloy.
Several years back I had bought it and filled mine but they didn’t tell me to use the stainless steel block off plates.
I found that the exhaust heat had melted about 1/2” of the fill. No engine damage but I added the block off plates from Dick Paterson and had no problems
I used that manifold on my last engine rebuild 1-1/2 years ago..

I too saw a little erosion of the Mondello zinc, though not to the extent
to call it "melting". Like Emery, I added the SS plates to protect the
zinc. That manifold is still on the engine in Alan's X-PB, and has at
least another 50,000 miles on it with no problems.

Ken,

I followed the advice of the guys on the Cadillac Power Forum and poured
the exhaust crossover in the heads full of melted pistons. I am a little
curious as to how it's survived because the EFI manifold (not installed)
has got all the crossover milled off the bottom. I wanted to get rid of
any and all unnecessary weight.

G'day,

Mondello sells a material that is used to fill engine blocks for drag strip engines. I've got some here in Houston and if I ever get to it I'll try
using it (belt) and block off plates (suspenders) on a manifold ans see what happens. I also have a material called Hardblok which does the same
thing.
