Alternator Issues

Last summer I had three alternators go out. On my last trip I had the starter quit. I tried to get one at parts store. Could find one and found a rebuild place. They rebuilt the starter. It worked much better than it has since I owned the RV. The start was replaced when I rebuilt the motor before I started taking trips. That was about 25000 miles ago.

I also found out why I might have trouble with alternators. I talked to the owner and he informed me that if I purchase an alternator from a parts place it may not last very long. The refurbished alternators are just repaired to work and not refurbished. He has had to rebuild many alternator and starters that were purchased from part store. His business has improved as results of the poor replacement components from part stores.

My wife pointed out that last summer I had commented that either the timing was slipping or the starter was getting weak. To bad I did not remember before the trip.

Mine went through 3 alternators in less than 2,000 miles. The last one from a reputable shop was replaced twice and failed in less than 300 miles
each time. Upon pulling it for diagnosis I found the keyed two pin connector had failed and was making intermittent connection. After checking the
rest of the circuit I replaced the pigtail, cleaned and NoOxid treated all the connections. I replaced the alternator with a lifetime warrantied
Duralast remanufactured one, that I figure I can get swapped out virtually anywhere. It has worked for the last two trips, about 500 miles so far. The
one I pulled is going to a long time local rebuilder who has been doing this since I was in high school, he rebuilt the alternator on my 70 1/2 Z28.
