Alternator Instalation

I have a 78 Royale with 403 engine. I am in midst of installing a
rebuilt Alternator/ Generator. I cannot determine how to remove the old
unit from it's main mounting bracket. This bracket is the Pivot Point
that uses the long bolt and nut. The generator has a bushing at the
rear mounting arm that is inserted into the mounting bracket. I cannot
see how to drive the bushing back into the mounting arm from the front.
There is no room to use a hammer and puch to drive it rearward and the
generator will not budge out of the mounting bracket. The rebuilt unit
has the same bushing that appears ready to drive forward into the
bracket when installing.

Any suggestions as to how to remove this bushing in the old unit???

Al,

I'm not sure if they;re all the same. What I have is a long bolt on top. The
Alternator swivels on it.
1 bracket/bolt underneath and a bolt in the back of the alternator.

The Long Bolt should work loose with a pair of vice-grips pulling. You might
have to put some WD40 or equivilant in there to soften it up.

I'm assuming the bolt was inserted from the rear?
Remove the other 2 bolts that hold the Alternator tight
Once the long bolt is out a bit, and even if it's not, try to wedge the
sleeve bearing out a bit. That'll allow the bolt to come out almost by hand
after a couple of twists with the vicegrips. Careful... it may come out
easier than you expect once it's loose.
With the other bolts loose the alternator should swing, though it may need a
little help.

Carefull with the 12Volt lead and it's connection. Remove it before staring
to 'swing' the alternator.

BE SURE 12 Volt lead to alternator is disconnected at Battery, or be sure
Battery leads are OFF.

I will take everyone's advice on how to finish removing the alternator. The
offending bracket mounting bolts are behind the power steering pump so I don't
want to remove the bracket if at all possible.

Hi Al,
My alternator is exactly as you described. Recently, removed it to
replace the regulator. The bushing at the rear stayed in when I
removed the long bolt, like the hole was too big for the bolt. You
might try to just leave the bushing in there. Otherwise, perhaps a
puller and a bolt or socket the same size as the bushing.

I removed old alternator with little trouble thanks to eveyone,s advice.
Installed rebuilt and promptly stripped threads out of the alternator
Housing. HI-LO Partsoffered tol replace alternator under warranty so will
try agai with another.
