GMCnetters,
Using the recommendations from this excellent group, I installed the
Autozone Dura Last DL7157 alternator listed for a 1979 Cadillac
Eldorado. It's described to be a 100 amp unit and was an exact
replacement fit. It runs much quieter than the old one which was making
worn bearing noises. As J.R. Wright suggested, I also upgraded the
power wire from the alternator to the battery isolator device by
installing an 8 ga. wire.
A pleasant surprise to me was that the "generator" warning light now
goes out completely once the engine starts instead of dimly glowing all
the time. I've read here before that the dim light is quirk of the GMC
which one has to get use to or do a diode modification of some sort to
get it to stay off. In my case, at least, the rebuilt DL7157 took care
of that problem also.
As Arch would say, that's what I did.
