My one year old Delco alternator bearing froze up and burned up the belt . Thank goodness no other damage was caused when the belt went flying . Is
there a bearing problems with these alternators ?

I've been told that AC Delco often equals Chines junk now. Was it a rebuild?

Gregory,

I am glad to hear that the peripheral damage was minimal.
I would love to hear more about this.
The bearing of a 27SI has never been a noted weak point.

I ALWAYS use an independent local rebuilder whom I have used for many
years. Clear back into the 6 volt GENERATOR AND SEPARATE REGULATOR days. I
have had very little issues with their work. THEY AIN'T CHEAP! When you
buy a Chinese $29.95 over the counter, one size fits all, alternators, etc.
You makes no difference if it has a lifetime warranty. Take the burned up
one back, and they give you another just like it. No matter if it cooks
when you are at the ends of the earth, not their problem.

I had one to do that once. It only happened when it got hot. By the time I
put the belt back on, it was cooled down enough to be free again. When it
would lock up, it took out the other two belts as well. Took me three times
before I finally figured out what was going on. New bearing solved the
problem. Not expensive at all. Rebuild kits available.

Never had that problem before or after.

I used an independent builder. Me. Bearings and brushes from NAPA per parts interchanger.

It's looking like this may have been caused by an inferior bearing...

However, for the sake of argument, assuming it is not a cheap bearing, you could also look at the alignment of the alternator pulley... If the
alternator bracket was cracked or bent in some way canting the alternator out of plane with the rest of the pulleys, the side load from the
misalignment could burn up a bearing...

Good point when I put the new one on I’ll make sure the pulleys line up with the others . Thanks look

Alternator bearing failure can be the result of an over-tightened belt.
