OK, gang. Here's the continuing saga of the "Sweat Lodge". Went to start it
today. Dead as a doornail not even a GEN light. Started the Onan. Used the
boost. Gen light came on. Cranked very slow but started. Drove it around to
charge it up. Noticed as soon as I got on the highway that the Gen light
came on. Pull over, Gen light on dim. Check belts. Seems OK. Take off again
and Gen light gets brighter and stays on. Hit BAT BOOST for grins. Light
goes out as long as it's depressed. Dead Alternator? Sure sounds like it to
me... Looks to be a reman from FLA-USA but will verify with Jim Bounds.
Anything I should be double checking?

Anyone had better luck with some types than others? Are the HD worth the
extra money? Just wondering. Funny after all these years, believe it or not,
this is the first one I have had go bad.

Dave,
I haven't been back to work on it yet.
Talked to Jim Bounds yesterday and he
said diode pack in the alternator until
I told him when I hit the BAT BOOST the
GEN light goes out. He said it could be
the battery isolator like Arch
mentioned. He said the center goes to
the ALT and one side goes to house
batteries and the other to engine
battery (just a diode inline with each
battery so it's a one way street for
current).
He said jumper from the center to the
lead that goes to the engine battery and
see if the light goes out. If so it's
the isolator. If not it's the Alt. I'll
try it in the next few days. If you get
a chance try it and let me know. The
isolators are $25 at GMCMART but looks
like everyone now-a-days goes with a
Battery Combiner ($109 and up).
My rebuilt Alt from JB only had a 90
day warranty. Go figure.... hope it's
not that. Looks like the Alt is about
$80 or so. Stay in touch.

I just had the same thing happen to me.
I drove it and noticed dim GEN
light. Next day, GEN light brighter.
Pulled in to fuel up, paid for
gas, went to start it and it wouldn't
even turn over. I jumped it from
the spare battery I have under the hood
and made it home.
What did you figure out?

Nate,

Don't forget to check your battery cables and ground connections - I had the
positive cable pull out of the terminal at the battery, same story!
Good luck,

Got my Alt. problem fingered out. Looks to be the Isolator just like Arch
mentioned. I jumpered between the center and top terminal and the GEN light
goes right out. For now I simply moved the top 2 wires to the center post
and I'll start searching for an Isolator. Glad it was something simple.
Thanks, Arch!

You might consider a combiner which does not load down the power as does an
isolator. You can see one on Gene's site.
