All GMC A/C dash units. For all years are not worth fixing.

Haven't read, or posted for a month. But I've just had it on trying to make the dash A/C work properly. The fallowing is what's wrong with ALL of these GMC's. Foam seals on the air control doors are gone. Vacuum diaphragms for the doors are stuck open, or closed. Vacuum lines/control dash valve, junk. Blower, and most related wires/components shot. All air ducts have turned to mush. Just not worth fixing anymore. I'll keep it the dash system for defrost only. MAYBE. Or better. Get a small dash 12V fan. Just put a Vintage Air system with a Sandon compressor in the 73 that I sold a few weeks ago. I installed it for the new owner for FREE. Tried to have the compressor run the Vintage A/C, and dash A/C. Both cooled. But poorly . YES. Some say that running both works. But the gauges say no by the readings. So now I'm disconnecting dash evaporator.
The Vintage A/C dash unit comes with brackets. That are made to hang the evaporator from the dash. These bracket will not work well in our GMC's. So I'm done with a 73/76 install kit. I'm starting to installing a Vintage Air/heat in our 78. So I'm designing 3 floor mounting brackets, and a plumbing kit for Jim K at Applied. That he can provide for all years.. These kits will make the installs simple. The new compressor is simple, light, and not over the valve cover. The Vintage A/C system is really nice. But not to simple to install now. These install kits will make it so anyone can install a complete system. I've sent Jim drawings/templets for the floor mount brackets. For 73 to 77 GMC's. Designing mounting brackets now for 77, and 78. Bob Dunahugh 78 Royale. And 4 COPO Yenkos

my job, and other projects have gotten in the way of my dash air upgrade in my 75. I was trying to decide weather or not to tie into the existing
evaporator, and you convinced me not to. There is a reason I am upgrading, because the OEM one never blew any air, no matter what i tried.(replacing
foam gaskets, and messing with the air flappers).

I do not have a Jimk system or a vintage air evaporator, but I ran into the same problem you must be. the interference between the engine hatch, and
engine access, and interfearance with the air ride control switches that are on the dash. Your 78 has the switches on the sidewall, so that is not
something you have to worry about.

I have a couple different evaporators, so I am not far into looking at all my options, but the direction I am thinking I will end up going is to
make a "mobile" mount. make it sturdy, but I think it needs the ability to be moved to a "service location" so I can have full access to the engine
hatch.

I know some people will put it at dinette or other locations, but for me, it HAS to be able to blow directly on the passenger and driver.

Has not been a very successful year trying to get the GMC cool. still trying to get the honda ev6010 to work for me, and have not had time to get
the dash A/C perfected. the owner of the A/C hose crimping tool I am borrowing is hopefully really patient.

You might what to check out my install. Danfoss 25,000 BTU A/C. Ripped out all the OEM and built a plenum that goes under the dash. Used the existing compressor. Works pretty well.

As the owner of a ’73 that has been baked and shaken in the hot Phoenix sun for years before I got it, I’m encouraging you to find a solution. My dash air has never worked and multiple comments on this list have suggested that even if I got it working to factory specs it would be a disappointment. So long as I don’t need a third mortgage to afford it, I’m in.

Great work, Gary. Brilliant using the old plenum box and extending it into the cabin - it houses a huge system.

I am also impressed with the side-panel vertically mounted small auxiliary evap/fan units that Sean Kidd used. These blow up and then across the
person sitting next to them, and recirculate at the floor.

With the 100% recirc of those units combined with the 100% outside air Max Air duct extension and system for the '76 (and 75?) Type II - which blows
pretty well and much much better than the under-dash distribution ducts - would make a pretty nice system.
