Check out P.43 of the Sept. 09' Family Motor Coaching. Some sort of gismo that you attach to the back of the MH that breads up the column of air that builds up behind the MH, and is suppose to help with fuel milage. For us it may mean 1/2mpg. What do you think?

In tests conducted with pick up trucks, it was found mileage was better with the tail gate up. Apparently there would be a slow moving bubble of air rotating behind the cab that smoothed the flow. Most motor homes would form an air bubble behind the rig, but because most of them are large and square, the bubble breaks up, actually causing more drag. Those should probably have vortex generators.
GMCs while not perfect, do seem to have some airflow advantages. Unfortunately, everything up on the roof tumbles the air coming over the top. I've seen some efforts at cleaning the air up, and I expect some improvement.
To really help things, you would have to get rid of mirrors, door hinges, roof vents, A/C, storage pods, and goat rails. Then maybe some vanes to shape the air coming around the aft corners.

Since the day I purchased my coach, I've averaged 8.9 MPG.......towing, not towing, water & waste tanks full, or empty, 500#'s of personal crap or not.......8.9 !

Find me a way to get up to 12 and I'll chase it, but I'm not chasing anything for 1/2 MPG.

Just my opinion.

way to get up to 12 and I'll chase it, but I'm not chasing anything for 1/2=
MPG. The only way you'll ever get to 12 is a .1 or .5 at a time. T=
here is no magic 3+ mpg leap (except drafting semis). All vehicles when the=
y go through the air leave a hole behind them that needs to be refilled. It=
's the air rushing into this void that creates the drag. This is why the pi=
ckup with the tailgate up is more efficent the air that tumbles into the be=
d as it comes over the roof creates a high pressure area in the bed from th=
e top of the cab to the top of the tailgate there by creating a fastback ef=
fect and letting the air flow more smoothly. With the tailgate down you hav=
e a big hole to fill behind the cab now it has more drag. The vortex genera=
tors do help on a square motorhome. I'm not sure they would be effective on=
the GMC since it's already the cleanest one out there. Trying to get rid o=
f parasytic drag - mirrors, hinges, AC, storage boxes antennas etc is the m=
ost effective. Why do you thing that new cars have gas cap doors and no dri=
p rails the manufacturers are chassing 1/100s not tenths. -- Brett Mac=

We need a large ogive shaped nose cone over the front of the coach to flow the air around it more. It would have to be clear and see-through of course.

Rocket science applied here.

A couple of JATO bottles should help fill the air void at the back of the coach.

Legitamate ways to reduce drag on a GMC Motorhome.

Install a front spoiler or air dam, the largest you can find that will still give you adequate ground clearance. This will reduce airflow under the vehicle which would otherwise swirl around on components that hang down under the vehicle causing drag. Some sort of undertray or belly pan may also help with this problem.
Nascar race cars even haved smoothed and boxed lower A arms on there suspension to lower underbody drag.

Reducing frontal area of the vehicle would also help, fitting the smallest mirrors you could comfortably see out of and removing all the ladder, A/C roof boxes would also help.

Fitting flush wheel covers would work also.

Doing all of the above would undoubtedly lower the Cd of the motorhome and give slightly better MPG,but at the expense of Comfort (no roof AC) Convenience (no roof pod) Safety (small mirrors) Ground clearance (spoiler)

Hi Jim,
I know lowering the front and raising the rear of a sedan or hatch back has been proven to reduce drag on production based race cars (like mine), but I am unsure how it would pan out on a vehicle with a very long roof like the GMC motorhome.

My own feeling is whilst lowering the front would obviously limit the amount of air passing under the vehicle (lessening drag) the subsiquent raising of the rear as a result would expose more of the roof section increasing the total frontal area increasing drag.

Also I suppose lowering the front would screw up the ground clearance and geometry of the suspension , increasing castor angle (making the steering more resistant to turn when the vehicle is in motion) and increasing negative camber scrubbing the inner edge of the front tyres out prematurely.

I have no idea whether GM actually put a full size GMC motorhome in a wind tunnel, but scale models may have been tested at various points in the vehicles design.

The GMC certainaly has an aerodynamic look about it, so at least creating the impression it slips through the air with ease(compared to other motorhomes of the period) was on the designers minds.

No. Someone asked about the largest spoiler available out there and I
used Fred's coach to show the one I have for sale. I never looked at
the two posters he had attached to his access panels. I should have
known that was Fred's coach since I was parked next to him at Santa
Rosa for a while.

No. When Steve said "this is the one for sale" he was referring to an
air dam. He was just using a picture of Fred's GMC to show an airdam
that looked like the one he has for sale.

George,
I will deliver it to the first person who commits to buy it for
$250.00 That is well below what they sell for new, that is what I
paid for it.
