I'm a new GMC owner and the owner of an "Aircoupe", so I couldn't pass up a
comment on this thread. (I've been lurking for a while just trying to get
familier with the GMC--my wife's airplane). The original coupe was
manufactured by ERCO and they coined the name Ercoupe. This is a low wing
plane with a twin tail. The rights to manufacture the plane was owned by
the Forney company in the 1950's and they produced the plane for several
years, and made some modifications/improvements to the plane. In 1964 or
1965 the ALON company bought the rights and manufactured the plane for
several years. They retained the nickname but spelled it "aircoupe".
Mooney subsequently bought the rights and eventually changed the tail from a
twin tail to a single tail and called it the Mooney M-10. The Forney is a
good version of the plane and is quite popular with coupe owners. Is Jack
Forney still around?
I don't know squat about the GMC yet, but I am learning. I didn't have the
good sense to learn and shop before we just bought. But we seem to have
bought a good one although I can tell from the list that it is very much
like owning a plane--ya just want to make it better all the time even when
its not broke. I'll keep lurking until I learn enough to cause some
controversy.
