A couple of years ago IIRC it was relatively simple to become certified to
handle refrigerants. It seemed like all you had to do was answer a couple
of multiple guess questions and send the questionnaire somewhere. If you passed
then you were mailed a certification. I saw that at the local auto parts store.

I wonder if someone knows what is involved today to become certified (and
I don't mean "certifiable" as in insane which is what we all must be to own a GMC
).

This is also covered at www.aircondition.com, including information about
online study and testing.

Patrick,
Thanks for the link.

I've been looking for something to add to my resume besides GMC Motorhome
technician.

NOTE TO TIM BROWN: This is something that you should too.

How to become an EPA certified A/C & Refrigeration Technician

The United States Environmental Protectection Agency (EPA) has required
that all persons
handling refrigerants should be certified. If you are not certified you
can't legally buy refrigerants.

EPA-Approved Section 609 certification is needed to service Motor
Vehicle Air Conditioners
and to purchase refrigerant. With 609 certification, you can purchase
refrigerant in any size
containers less than 20 pounds, including the one-pound disposable
cans. YOU CAN STUDY
FOR THIS EXAM ON-LINE AND TAKE THE EXAM ON LINE WHEN YOU ARE
READY.

I did this a couple of years ago; it is insanely easy and cost $15. Try
www.imaca.org for details.

I have had extremely good luck with a product called "Freeze 12" which
claims to be compatible with R-12 and the old mineral oil. If you need mfg
data, etc. let me know.
