Air Conditioners

"Sorry, Carl. I have to disagree with that. There have been many
improvements in the design. Newer units pull less power and operate
more efficienrly. The airflow is better, they start better and are
quieter."

"' I have two friends with the original units and although they are amazing as far as longevity, they don't hold a candle to the newer Duotherm units when it comes to cooling capabilty and noise.."

Emery and Bob,

I can't argue with either of you on those points but I still have set a low priority on replacing my original AC units. I'm sure I will wonder why it took me so long when I finally go for it. I guess my trusted source was mistaken on this issue.

My point remains, that for those of us on a budget (and aren't we all?) the old unit may get us by for a while. It is NOT one of those things that will kill us or leave us stranded by the side of the road. Just a bit uncomfortable! :)

My experience with the new Duo-therm Penguin has not been good.
My old Penguin had two printed circuit boards and would control the temperature in the coach. It quit on me so I bought a new Penguin at Camper World and it doesn't cool as well or the heat strip doesn't heat as well. They came in from the shop to tell me the unit installed would not turn off, but they would order and replace the inside control unit. After two weeks of trying to find another unit we found the medium blower speed did not work so back again to find another unit. It was replaced and then found to have another blower speed not to work. Their solution was to install a BriskAir panel but it didn"t have a heat strip. After that I gave up and went with no medium speed. The older one would vary the blower speed depending on temperature inside. The newer one you have to do it manually, high or low.

Don't get me wrong--as long as they are working, I wouldn't replace them since they are still great units.

Kind of off topic, but I've been seeing an awful lot of rooftop AC units on newer work vans, etc. that seem to be quite short and wide in comparison to our rooftop units. I have not been close enough to see who makes these, but was wondering if there might be a place for these, especially in the rear hole. As they are shorter, they may fit nicely if you have a rear ladder and rails on the coach.

One way to reduce heat gain is to tint the windows.
Reflects a lot of heat back out of the coach in the summer and back into the coach in the winter.

With Limo tinted windows, 2 roof airs, working Dash air and a secondary AC unit under the couch I'm able to flash freeze my lunch even when it's over 100 outside!

My coach came with 2 roof airs. When I first got it some years ago the roof was painted silver and I can tell you it didn't cool very well in the hot southern California desert unless i was parked under a tree. I repainted the roof the whitest white I could find and yes it made a big difference on inside cooling. Just feel the roof of any car in the hot sun and compare it to a very white one and you will understand.
