Air Cleaner

Will a standard air cleaner for any GM
auto/truck from that erea work? How about the preheat shroud?

If the preheat shroud is the flex tube that goes from the manifold to
the air cleaner, it can be fabricated from a 3" piece of exhaust tubing
cut in half the long way, weld another 2 inch piece to the center & then
hose clamped to the exhaust manifold. To better describe it, it sort of
looks like a large T fitting with the bottom half of the horizontal tube
missing. The metal flex tubing from that makeshift stove that attaches
to the air cleaner is available at any auto parts store. The air
cleaner is a different story. You need to get a 4bbl air cleaner from a
vehicle that has an HEI distributer. They're offset to clear the
distributer cap. Eldorado's, Olds 88's, Toronado's etc.....almost any
4bbl GM V8 should work as long as the distributer is a HEI

My 73 came with an air cleaner that I believe to be original.
It may have been equiped for the exhaust stove at one time
although there is no longer any baffle door nor is the sheet
metal stove on the manifold.

Mine is different from the one you describe in that it does not
have the enlarged end for connection to a hose.

In my past life, working on cars, I am sure I saw both the style
you have discribed and the style my GM has on Oldsmobiles.
Just don't remember the specifics of years etc.

I never liked either style since the snorkle is so restrictive.
I think the restrictive snorkle was used to quiet down the
quadrajet.

I plan on repeating a modification I used on my last RV.

I will remove the snorkles from 2 air cleaners salvaged from
late 79's early 80's GM pickup truck air cleaners.

These air cleaners come complete with the flapper valves for
exhaust stoves etc. (we get winter up here). The snorkle is
a large oval, consistant cross section that does nothing to
quiet the quadrajet. With two of them I don't think these
snorkles restrict the air cleaner much either.

GM also used a pretty decent plastic hose from the snorkle to
the grill and the same truck contributes this hose as well as the
hose mount used at the front at the radiator frame.

When completed, air cleaner repainted etc. with the stock hoses
the last one I did looked factory, as it should have, all the parts
except the brazing rod were factory.

For this project on my GMC I havn't done anything more than to
get the parts. No point in sorting out what angle to braze the
snorkles to the main air cleaner housing etc. when I havn't
even figured out what intake manifold or fuel injection system
I will use.

Arch at least you are now looking to solve issues higher on the motor!

The Eldo's and Toro's will work, but be slightly higher than the original
motorhome aircleaner. Not sure about the 88's, but I imagine they'll be way
too high if traffic on the Toro email list is any sign.

While many air cleaners GM used have desirable snorkels the
tight clearances between the hood and the carb would prevent
use of most if not all of them.

That is why I have chosen to take the good snorkels and braze
them onto the original air cleaner base.

I often thought that I should fasten a dryer hose to the end of
the air intake and put it behind the grille.

I did that to mine. Took about 30 minutes. 5 to do the job, 25 to
finish the beer.
