Ahhh crud, not again

Sitting on my bed in my backless garment, looking out a floor to ceiling
window on the 8th floor. Towards the west hills of Portland. Can see the
communications towers that the TV and Radio stations use.
Beautiful Evergreen Trees mixed here and there with various deciduous trees
in full fall color. Beauty can be found in the strangest of places.

If any of you wondered why I have been silent for a few days, I am in the
hospital in Portland, Oregon for a mitral valve repair. After a couple of
hiccups in scheduling, they got 'er done. Seems to be working ok. but, these
people have a thing about excess body fluids. So, they pumped me full of IV
Lasix. A potent diuretic. Every 10 minutes, clock regular, you are up and
filling up their jars. Any luck today, I will be homeward bound, and out of
their clutches. Staff here in Providence Hospital are first rate, but, enuf
is enuf.

I need to get home and work on a eulogy for my father in law. He passed
away last Saturday at the age of 100 years, plus 11 months. Why I mention
this here is that he was one of my heroes. Married for 79 years.

One of the "GREATEST GENERATION" He was a Marine. World War II vet.

Extensive action in the South Pacific.

Came home, and Korea broke out. So, he re-upped and went to Korea. Came
home shortly after surviving the CHOSIN reservoir "strategic withdrawal".

Won the Bronze Star with "V", and numerous other awards. Came home in 1952,
picked up a nail apron and hammer and started building custom homes with his
father in law. No bitchin or sniveling. No battle fatigue, or PTSD or drug
abuse. 138 pounds of marine. Uniform still fits. We will bury him in it with
honors. NEVER FORGET THEIR COMMITMENT AND SACRIFICE.

Oh, I almost forgot. Judy's and my first date was a GMC rally at Palm
Desert. She loved it. So we wound up married, with a MARINE for a father in
law.

Glad to hear you are back, Jim. Tell Judy not to be too hard on you! =
And, while talking of family and friends and food and football, let's not f=
orget basketball. Last night in the finals of the Maui Invitational Gonzag=
a (ranked 3) beat Duke (ranked 1) in one of the best college games one coul=
d imagine. For those of us in the northwest, having a small school like Go=
nzaga (around 5000 students) take down another powerhouse but small school =
like Duke (6500 students) was a real treat. I can only hope you all had a =
chance to experience that game. Gonzaga and Duke not only have built baske=
tball powerhouses, they have done it with real student athletes who regular=
ly finish among the top scholars in all of college sports. Now if we could=
just get some of the largest programs to get their kids out of the isolate=
d world of athletic department based =E2=80=9Ccollege classes=E2=80=9D and =
out into the real classrooms of American Colleges and Universities we would=
all have something new to be thankful for - besides the health and well be=
ing of the members of our GMC community, that is. Jerry Jerry Work=
