If any of you wondered why I have been silent for a few days, I am in the
hospital in Portland, Oregon for a mitral valve repair. After a couple of
hiccups in scheduling, they got 'er done. Seems to be working ok. but,
these people have a thing about excess body fluids. So, they pumped me full
of IV Lasix. A potent diuretic. Every 10 minutes, clock regular, you are
up and filling up their jars. Any luck today, I will be homeward bound, and
out of their clutches. Staff here in Providence Hospital are first rate,
but, enuf is enuf.
I need to get home and work on a eulogy for my father in law. He
passed away last Saturday at the age of 100 years, plus 11 months. Why I
mention this here is that he was one of my heroes. Married for 79 years.
One of the "GREATEST GENERATION" He was a Marine. World War II vet.
Extensive action in the South Pacific.
Came home, and Korea broke out. So, he re-upped and went to Korea. Came
home shortly after surviving the CHOSIN reservoir "strategic withdrawal".
Won the Bronze Star with "V", and numerous other awards. Came home in 1952,
picked up a nail apron and hammer and started building custom homes with
his father in law. No bitchin or sniveling. No battle fatigue, or PTSD or
drug abuse. 138 pounds of marine. Uniform still fits. We will bury him in
it with honors. NEVER FORGET THEIR COMMITMENT AND SACRIFICE.
Oh, I almost forgot. Judy's and my first date was a GMC rally at Palm
Desert. She loved it. So we wound up married, with a MARINE for a father in
law.

Jim,

Thanks for telling us about your trial. Too bad that diuretic's probably
gonna keep you running for a while yet. Don't get too rambunctious for a
while!

And also for telling about your esteemed member of the Greatest
Generation! It's all too easy, even for those of us who over-lapped with
them, to forget their exertions, sacrifices, and courage throughout the
wars, and placid acceptance of their lives afterward. With two WWII &
Korea step-fathers, I saw what REAL men are. I worry about the current
generation in general, but from what I hear, once they're on the
battlefield, we can still be proud of them. Too bad we don't have
universal service for all of them, so they can be properly trained.

I'll be thinking about you.

Ken H.

Yes, they have me on strict rules. I can't lift anything over 10 pounds
until
they clear me to do so. They accessed the mitral valve through the right
side groin area. So they did not open my chest again. This micro surgery is
amazing, some day they will have nano sized drones that can run around
inside blood vessels and do this stuff. Going to have some post surgical
therapy to do. Treadmills etc.

Jim -
DO THE REHAB. And you'll be fine. As to the funeral/recognition of your Pop-In-Law, If you put him in a national cemetery they'll provide a bugler
and a military funeral. If not, get hold of the VFW or the American Legion, they should supply a bugler to play Taps and an honor guard. Get the
Patriot Riders out and Send him with the proper pomp and circumstance. And tell the youngsters why he deserves these accolades and more.

The gent who gave me my first job as Chief walked off Bataan in the Death March and made it home.... and more than one soldier claimed if it wasn't
for Cap'n Bert they would have given up. He passed a couple years back, and we Sent him in style with all of the above.

Have arranged for honor guard. He is eligible for Arlington, but he
pre-arranged his burial and prepaid for his funeral services, casket,
everything. They have a family plot, where he and his bride of 79 years can
spend eternity. There will be a flag draped coffin, full honor guard, taps,
and 21 gun salute. Flag folding and presentation to his widow. One more vet
passes silently into our past. Let us NEVER FORGET. Thanks Johnny.

Sometimes, I take kinda a different view of hospitalization, especially for these kind of things. You went in to take care of something that could
have killed you. Having the procedure means that you will be around for a lot longer. And the peeing.... it's a small price to pay for life. So, I'm
glad you went to hospital and got r' done. Means we will be seeing and hearing from you for a longer time to come. Now...pay attention to the Docs and
don't do anything you shouldn't. Hope to see you at a rally sometime.

Jim,

My heart doctor, on Thursday, gave me permission to back off the Lasix.
if the swelling doesn't come back, I can quit planning my life around the
location of restrooms.

Jim, we agree with Larry W. These are the times to live in if we are going
to have health issues, and who doesn't. How wonderful they can "see" and
fix things before they would have been seen, even a few years ago. Relish
your inconvenience and look forward to better days.

Hoping to meet you and Judy one of these days. Praying for a speedy,
complete recovery.
