GMCnetters,

Looks like the "reply-to" is fixed now. In addition, the filter is in once
again in place to reject "multi-part"(HTML, attachments, etc.) emails.

Another change is that "bounces" apparently go back to the sender now
instead of coming to me. There should be an explanation - probably
slightly cryptic - as to why it bounced. If you're subscribed and you get a
bounce saying you must be a member to post, be sure that you're using the
same address you're subscribed at. I'll be adding a line to the "trailer"
with your subscribed address as a reminder. Also look for server names that
sometimes get inserted into your "From" headers(usually a sign that you
haven't properly set the "From" address in your email software) which will
also cause a bounce. An example would be user becoming
user

Some of the problems with HTML and pictures have already been reported by
the digest subscribers. ANY format other than plain text requires more than
twice the bandwidth(including storage in the archives). Since the headers
are stripped for both the digest and the archives, both HTML posts and
binary attachments(i.e. pictures) appear as a jumble of HTML tags and text
hash. IMO, HTML is totally unnecessary for email. It's
basically an attempt by the sender to dictate the appearance of a document
on my desktop. To quote a long forgotten contributor to Usenet, "I put
great forethought into the select of fonts for my email software, and I
don't appreciate your attempts to change them." If you want to be creative,
do so on your own computer.

Now, about pictures. The average plain text email is about 1kb. A 20%
compressed jpeg in 640x480 resolution is going to be around 70kb. There are
about 400 subscribers to GMCnet(approx. 240 on digest). When you send that
70kb picture, you just made 400 copies of it and at least 240 of those are
illegible. If for some reason, that picture was is bitmap format, it would
probably be near 1mb and you would have just consumed over .4Gb of internet
resources. My "home" email inbox has a 3mb limit and in the six years that
I've had the account, it's only been maxed once(countless close calls tho').
There simply isn't room for a couple dozen of you to start sending graphics
thru GMCnet and I certainly can't archive hundreds of unviewable graphics.
Photopoint is a much better way to handle these.

Sorry to rant a bit(it was a stressful weekend), but there are reasons that
I've set things up the way they are.

Your friendly neighborhood GMCnet admin,
Patrick

One problem --

I have had two GMCnet users contact me because they cannot find
GMCnet. They unsubscribed for a trip and now when they try to subscribe
Majordumbo says GMCnet no longer exists. Is there a way to send a change
over note to past subscribers so we do not leave them in the lurch ??

Have them try sending an email to gmcmotorhome-subscribe

Or just send me the addresses and specify real-time or digest.

BTW, majordumbo is right. Since it no longer handles the list, as far as
it's concerned, it doesn't exist. Computers have no sense of humor.

It would be gmcmotorhome-digest-subscribe for the digest.

Thanks Ken and everyone else that's sent supportive emails. One thing that
this system will do better is the handling of bounced mail. By sending it
back to the sender with an explanation, that saves me from doing the same
task manually. When a list gets as big as this one has, that becomes a
pretty large task. Typically I see up to 100 bounces a week.

Yes that is what I did, but I was thinking of all the others that do not
know me and are not very knowledgeable on how to get connected, they may
not understand where you have gone.

I'll be making changes to the FAQ page at my site this week. Otherwise,
they'll have to find us the way they always have.

For all of you who haven't been there lately, www.gmcmotorhome.com is where
we all found this place to start with. It's still there and deserves some
of your time to check out periodically. Lots of good info, links, etc., and
the link to sign up for the email list.

Thanks, Patrick, for all of your on-going, behind the scenes, efforts. They
are all appreciated.

Erv,
You make a strong point about the Digest subject headings. We all need to
be more attentive to the subject lines of our emails to really enhance this
improvement.

It does make it a lot easier to find exactly what you're looking for IF the
subject lines are correct.

Roger

Patrick,
I really appreciate your efforts in keeping this free service running right.
Once again you prove simpler is better. Showy fonts don't add enough to
make it worth while. Pictures on Photo Point are as good a way as is
available to handle the large files involved. I'm a proponent of your
statement "If you want to be creative, do so on your own computer". I don't
like creativity forced upon me when the facts will do nicely.

Hi Patrick,

Thanks for all your work on the email list. I run a gateway and mail
system at UF and the best thing that ever happened was when someone
upstream screwed something up so I no longer get bad message notices as
postmaster - enjoy the newfound freedom!!! Just out of curiosity, does the
new system automatically archive. . . .maybe. . . .hopefully :^)????

Cheers,
