AC Improvements

On my '75 Palm Beach I've modified the floor slot plenum so that I can now
generate good air flow out the driver's side of the floor slot while
maintaining the recirc intake function on the passenger side. I've
reassembled everything just to the point that I could check the flow but
haven't yet recharged the system to see how it cools.

While I was checking the air flow I noticed another problem which may
affect the cooling. Most of the air flow through the evaporator was
concentrated towards the drivers side on the vehicle. Some of it was
flowing around the end where it missed the fins completely and what was
coming through the fins was concentrated toward that end of the coil. I
used some foam to stop the flow around the end then installed some baffling
behind the core to even out the flow and it now has uniform flow through
the core.

When I began my system had a very anemic air flow and the air flow that was
there was not as cool as it should be. Now I've got much improved air flow
and I assume that the flow will also be cooler. I'll probably be getting
about all the cooling possible from the dash. What I don't know is whether
this will be enough cooling to be comfortable without running the roof AC
or should I still pursue a second evaporator to increase the capacity? As
soon as I charge it and run it I'll know right away but then it'll be too
late.

What's the opinion of the group? Is a properly operating dash unit enough
or is the second evap necessary? Is there something else that I'm missing?

Thanks in advance

Dick

Yes and No in my opinion, depending on where you are traveling. If
outside it is 90 to 100, probably not not enough without second evap.
Certainly you would need the privacy drapes pulled even at 85 to 90, and
that always seems a little hoocky (how do you spell that) to me.
