My presaftey work is coming along nicely, front end work is almost done new shocks new upper ball joints new tires just need the new intermediate
steering shaft boot to wrap up. Then on to rear suspension where I see I have ac delco shocks that look quite old so will probably replace just
wondering if the delco shocks are the original type and if they still make them for our GMC,s could not find the shocks in the online parts exchange.
I see lots of discussion on the KYB AND Bilstien shocks but no other comparable brands eg Monroe etc. I see most do not offer life time warranty but
they are locally available

Wow 40 year old shocks! I'll but you will notice an improvement when you install the KYB shocks that you should be selecting.i don't think delco has
been available for about an eon.

Terry, the GMC motor home uses unique rear shocks. My parts source here
says that Delco's are no longer available for the coach. KYB seems to be
the preferred shock, although Bilstein's have their following, too. My
experience has been that the Bilstein upper mountings are weak, and failure
prone. Their warranty sucks. Your experience might vary.

There are no other comparable brands for the rear. Many (most? all?) shock absorbers have more resistance compressing than decompressing (or vice
versa?). Pretty much all shock absorbers are made that way. The KYB and Bilstiens work opposite to the rest, because the GMC swing arms require that
(when the suspension moves up, the shock expands, instead of compressing).

Don't substitute something because it is dimensionally the same. It won't behave correctly.

And FWIW, many times Bilstien has denied the lifetime warranty because they say the shock had been operated outside its design limits (abused).
Haven't heard that about KYBs.

That's what I figured as I could find no numbers for the delco I ordered new kybs as I am pretty sure the delco would be toast

Already ordered new kybs but I wondered how old the delco were as I could find no numbers for them I figured they are at least 20 years old.

Folks here have said the bushings won't last, and they replace them with urethane bushings. I searched the forum for urethane bushing and polyurethane
bushing and came up with one part number, but I think it takes two different part numbers to fill all 8 mountings. I thought I had the source
bookmarked, but can't find it anymore.

I just replaced my Delco's with KYB and holy hell what a difference.
The Delcos actually still feel okay off the vehicle, but there's a night and day difference in the way it handles now. The side to side sway is gone.

I am sure I will find the same the PO ran with one broken front shock and put it down to needing a wheel alignment so I am sure he would not have
noticed if the back ones were nonfunctional . even with all that it still drove fine when we drove it home so looking forward to even better handling
after all the work we are doing

I thought mine was fine as well, just wobbled a bit side to side when coming out of a curve. I figured that was just the way the rode and was okay
with it.
I replaced them more for the hell of it than anything else and man was I blown away by the improvement.

ha ha same here, my coach did this weird rocking side to side.

Put on 6 new shocks and, oh, theres the problem.

4 of the old shocks were so worn that I could easily compress and extend them with 1 hand.

2 were just bad

They were Bilstiens.

Here is a copy/paste of a post I did a couple of weeks ago on this issue. HTH.

In 2002 I brought my coach home from Houston. Among other things, I checked the shocks, and found all Bilstiens. Two were broken at the top ring. Two
were intact, but all of the oil had leaked out, so were nonfunctional. The last two were functional but near dead. On the advice of others on the net,
I bought kyb's. I have about 65K miles on them now and my only complaint is that the bushings in the mounting rings are too soft for the application,
especially the uppers. The rubber di-forms and actually squashes out of the ring; I have replaced all of the bushings with "Energy Suspension" 3/4"
Polyurethane hourglass shaped bushings, Part #9.8108. These bushings have held up for 6 or 8 years now without degrading. Unless kyb has responded to
other complaints relative to the bushings and corrected it with a harder material, I personally would put those Polyurethane bushing in new kyb's and
avoid this problem later. Other than that issue, the kyb's have preformed well for me and I'd buy them again. JMHO

Several have commented about the bushings I am looking to see if I can find a Canadian supplier of the bushings and but will prob have to mount them
as is for the time being as I want to get on the road and enjoy the summer.
