AC Choices

Our 78 Royale is down at the Coop getting refurbished/repaired after the accident. The AC (2009 vintage) cools ok but drips water into the coach. The
CoRV is getting a full repaint so I want to go ahead and replace it since it has to come out anyway. Living here in Florida, adequate A/C is a major
priority! To that end I am seeking some input. Based on the 25ft toyhauler that was our previous RV, one 13.5k unit is marginal at best. I want cold
AC and a minimum amount of noise. I only have 30 amp service and I am not sure if the coach is set up for two A/C's. Recommendations, suggestions?

JD,

I've no suggestion for a particular A/C, but I don't think you'll ever get
enough cooling from one unit for FL. So, my suggestion is to add a
separate 120vac/15A circuit for the rear unit. I had to resort to that on
the 90 Airstream Land Yacht we once had. Just plug into both the 30A and
the 15A sockets on the power post. To cover the rare occasion when there
was only 50A available, I mounted 30A and 15A sockets in a box equipped
with a 50A plug. It worked out very nicely.

I didn't do it on that coach, but it would be easy to feed both circuits
from the Onan if necessary.

JD,
A second AC would be a huge improvement.
On my 78 Royale I have the rear bedroom. But the mistake I think I made was to put a 15K AC in the rear. It cycles too often, because of the small
area. If I had it to do over, I would put a13k unit in the aft.

If you are running wire be sure it is minimum12 ga rated for 20A. Otherwise you will be over the 15A at start and right up to it at run. Granted the
new units draw less than the Duotherms but you want as little voltage drop as possible when in already marginal campgrounds. If I rememer the last
time I probed the larger Duotherm ran at about 16-17 Amps and the smaller around 13.5A. But that was years ago and CRS may factor.

I think cooling is all about insulation.

I love my atwood 15.5k btu. It is a little uglier and bigger then a low profile unit. It cools well and you could run 2 on 30 amps. However
fitment of a 2nd A/C in rear spot may take adjustments to rear lights and ladder rail. I think with tinted windows good insulation you can stay cool
with one 15.5 atwood.

If i had a better looking coach, i would go with the coleman mach 8. It seems to be the lowest power consumption when it comes to a low profile
unit. From what i have talked with people and read i think you can run 2 15.5btu coleman mach 8 on a 30 amp, but have not owned one myself.

Do not buy a dometic duotherm. Dometic dows have a new one out i know nothing about.

The above running 2 off 30 amp, means you may not be able to have them both on and microwave ect. My atwood uses very little power maintaining on
low, but runs about 11-12 amps full blast startup. Monitoring it i never seen the amp meter get up to the max power they have as a spec rating.

My '77 was already wired for the rear A/C. Fitment is not the best for some models though. There is a 14 x14 framework forward of the rearmost one but
that is in my hallway and would need special consideration.

Scott,

IIRC GMC put an 11K BTU in the rear position.

Rob,
I think a new technology 11k AC in the aft would be perfect.
But who makes a quality new one?

I agree that insulation is the major factor here. As Rob said if you want/have to go the double roof A/C
route I would go the 11 K BTU aft.

I have a single 13.5 K BTU Penguin mid coach in my 26' GMC and it works and cools just fine.
I store mine at the COOP and would be happy to show it to you anytime. JimB will show you the
most efficient and safest hook up method.

Thanks for all the info. I appreciate the hard earned knowledge here on the forum. Now at least I have some ideas to talk with Jim B about.

Seems likely that dripping into the coach is an issue that could be fixed on that particular unit rather than replacing the unit.

No Coach yet but likely center kitchen, dry side bath Royale, 78, 403, hopefully with good original white Imron paint.

Besides cost, it is really nice to have an AC in the rear bedroom. I don't mind being hot during the day, but it's so nice to be cool at night.

I have 2 13k penguins in my Royale, 50 amp service, it's pretty nice.
