AAA roadside assistance

HEADS-UP to anyone with AAA PremierRV or PlusRV- just received my invoice for renewal and it contained a note stating "that starting with my renewal
RV towing, extrication,and tire service is limited to $500 per service call and $1000 per household per membership year. Members will be responsible
to pay service provider directly for all other costs of service above these dollar limits at the time service is provided."
So I guess it's time to re-evaluate my roadside assistance coverage.
yes I'm going to ask
what's the best roadside insurance for our GMC's?

Joe,

I've had RVRoadhelp (a part of Allstate) for at least 22 years. I've been
towed several times, the last time 335 miles from Tupelo, MS to Americus,
GA. Other than having to insist that I be towed to the nearest "capable"
repair facility (I've more than once had to point out the few there are),
I've never had any trouble getting towed (sometimes at the direction of a
supervisor, however). I've never paid one cent, nor have I ever heard a
word from the company after the event. $119 a year now, IIRC (which has
been wasted for the last year, I guess). They've probably got a cheaper
introductory price.

Much the same experience as Ken H. 309 mile tow from Shasta City to San Jose, no hassle, about an hour and a half from first call to hookup with
capable equipment. Got my money back from all those years of non-use!

I took the other direction and went for price... that being the FMCA deal. My approach was, get the coach off the freeway and someplace safe. When
the current one lunched the mill I was going S on I 75 out of Chattanooga.. and managed to coast into a roadside rest. They sent a flatbed promptly
but the driver was reluctant to pick up the front of the 26' with its wheel lift. It then took about three hours for them to send a HUGE wheel lift
triple axle wrecker for it. Since 'the closest competent shop' was given as McMichaels (across from Road Atlanta)was over a hundred miles away by a
bit they negotiated an extra hundred which I gave the driver. A bargain. I told the driver, just follow me into this driveway a half mile before
McMichael's shop and drop it here. He was most pleased to do so. Paula escorted his six - year - old daughter who was traveling with him to the
bathroom and cookied her on the way back. Driver told me they would get $1250for the haul total. Cost me 179 so I figured it a bargain.
Either go all out as Ken does if you travel great distances, or keep it cheap if most of your trips are like mine fairly close in.

I've had my GMC mortorhome i think since 1989. I have never had additional
towing/roadside service policies on it. I have been towed twice. The first
time, I had a master cylinder failure on south bound Interstate 5 just
south of Seattle Center. I was towed to a GMC dealership in Tacoma, about
30 miles or so. I paid out of my pocket. Don't remember exact amount, but
with basic hook up fees plus mileage, it was less than $200.00.
The second time was a couple of years ago, I had a water pump bearing
fail. It also was a short tow. 8 - 10 miles. With hook up fees and mileage,
it was $250.00.
During all those years since 1989, I have paid $0.00 in premium costs.
I am way ahead on this deal. Your experience will vary.

$300 for about a mile tow this summer. towed me off the interstate exit ramp and dumped me in the walmart parking lot in cottage grove, OR. I paid
$300 and AAA reimbersed me. the AAA provider could not get me out of traffic soon enough so I had approval to use a non AAA provider that was on the
scene. my yearly coverage is like $180, so I am $120 in the black this past year.

I then had my tranny puke out in Wyoming, and towing insurance(automobile- not AAA), towed 820 miles. That was thousands of dollars. Had I not
been able to convince that insurance the nearest GMC qualified shop was 820 miles away, I would of went back to AAA and had them tow me 200 miles.

I know one of my employees just paid cash to get his truck door unlocked to get the key out, and that was $89.00.

back 13 years ago, our tow company barely paid a guy $10/hr. Now I think they hire at $18/hr. The truck, DOT regs, ect... and insurance has to be
driving costs through the roof, so i would expect to see more changes and cost going up on towing insurance. especially with guys like me that get a
820 mile tow covered.

I blew a trans on US 30 in Warsaw, IN on the way home from the GMCMI Mansfield rally. It was 62 miles on US 30 to my hangar which is 1 block off of
US 30. No tow insurance so I called three local towing companies. First one wanted $900. Second one wanted $950 for the 62 mile easy tow on a 4
lane limited access highway with no major towns along the route. Third one said "we close at 5PM. Call us in the morning."

I hitched a ride home with a friendly GMCer and picked up my daughter and my Colorado pick up. We towed it back our self. Heather set the cruise
control on the pickup to 55 and in just over an hour we were home.

I still do not have tow insurance.

I have good sam roadside. They moved the bus conversion three times. Two times would have been close to 1000 and one time well over that number. It
cost about 100 per year give or take a little. I bought the conversion in 2004 so you can do the math. I was told when I started traveling in the
motor home that roadside insurance was a good investment and so far I am glad to have had it. I understand that they are in business to make money so
someone somewhere is buying protection and not using it.
