Helped a friend pull his gas tanks last Sunday. This GMC had sat for 11 years, and ended up with a coating of a gooey gunk on the tank bottom. Then rust up above the bottom. So I told him to used a Hotsy to clean the inside by way of the tank sender opening. Worked very well. Then put vinegar in for two days. During that time. Shook the tank around. Then a power washer. How need to use a small fan to blow air into it for a few days. Looking really good. Bob Dunahugh
A way to clean out really messy gas tanks

The top of the tank has condensed gue as well and it will get in the fuel
sooner than later, so do'nt thing it is a done deal.
We know this by experience.

I took the fuel tanks out of The Blue Streak to a company that strips car bodies chemically and they came back IMMACULATE!
Unfortunately one of them has been seriously attacked by metal eating rust worms and it's going to be a PITA to fix.

There are lots of ways
To clean tanks.
The key item in a diy tank cleaning, is to get them back in and get them full of gas. Then keep them topped off for a while.
Vinegar may leave them clean, but a acid cleaned tank will flash rust worse then it was before you started in a short time frame. (Within a week)
At least that is what I have observed many times with motorcycle tanks, and I cant see gmc tanks any different.
