I'm a little new at this, mailing lists, GMC MH and all, but I have a
tale to tell that will show you how helpful the Black List was in saving
my butt.

I picked up a very well cared for '78 Royale with side bath near San
Diego on May 9. The previous owners preserved and improved the coach in
many ways. I am not blaming the P.O.'s for any of the trouble I had.

The first nite as it got dark I noticed the dash lights did not work,
had a small flashlight that cured that. Slept in a rest area east of
Riverside Ca., woke up to the beautiful site of a gazillion windmills
whirling away on the surrounding hills. Had a little holding tank odor,
will get tank stuff at first chance.

Stopped and spent day and nite at my sisters house in Sun City, Az. Odor
worse, stopped in Tucson (I forgot to tell you I am headed for Ft Myers,
Fl) at Camping World, got some little goodies and soon holding tank
deodorizer.

Fixed dash lights with small wire wrapped around a hot fuse and the
instrument lite fuse (went around dash rheostat) the P.O. had added 14
extra 2" instruments on top of dash and I think fried the rheostat.
Rolling now, had to put my hat over two inst. cause they blinded me.
Odor worse, better with windows closed than open (sometimes).

Stayed a few hours at rest stop in New Mexico, driving along, looking
good, still got the odor, looked at batt. gauge, seemed low, played with
lights and ammeter was motionless, Oh S---.
Am in the middle of nowhere, and so hot it would take 4 hours to cool
off the engine compartment to even look at the alt. plus I am not sure
how the circuitry is in this coach and don't want to spend all day
finding the problem even if I was somewhere to get alt repaired.
Brainstorm, went to NAPA, hardware store, Duckworth's variety store for
a small battery charger, nothing in the whole town. Looked back in an
alley, guy with a small repair shop, persuaded him to sell a very old
and small charger, Got extension cord, hooked to house 110, out window
to engine comp. to charge batt. Was afraid to use aux. batt switch not
knowing it solenoid would last continuously. Still stinks, front air
gave out and am running roof air sense I must run the genset anyway.

Had trouble next day on hills, vapor lock or just weak fuel pump, but an
aux electric pump helped at first, looked for a new electric pump in San
Antonio, engine died in HEAVY traffic on a hill, Cop stopped traffic so
I could back down and swing into a Condo housing parking lot, don't know
how I made the swing in to it, I think the GMC fairy gave me one. Let it
cool, gave up on pump, ran better now that it was dark, still smells,
forgot to mention it also backfired when I was having the bulking on
hills.(clue)

I am getting to the Black List.

Stopped and slept a while about 50 miles east of San Antonio in rest
area, got up around 2:00 a.m., got organized, made a cup of coffee and
hit the starter, cranked over great, but nothing!!!!

Will finish tomorrow, took up enough space today. Things are "rotten" in
other places besides Denmark.

After all that! Dick can still use the tag line, "Proud owner of a 1978
Royale"!

Are we GMCrs a crazy bunch or what?

I can't wait for part 2 Dick!
