Hi y'all, (or "all y'all" depending on local usage)

What's a good replacement for our GMC air conditioner?

Our comprsesssor quit working, in Yuma, a couple of weeks ago, so I just
let the fan run to bring in outside air. Then the cooling fan started
screeching, so I said a few naughty words and shut it down. Outside temp
in the nineties, inside temp near 100.
Mumble, mumble, gripe, etc. bought a portable a/c unit at Target to
prevent meltdown.

Now I really need to replace that original unit. Well, 40 years is a
pretty good lifespan for any rv accessory.

The question now is Atwood, Dometic, Coleman, etc.
Thanks for any suggestions

Thought you were talking about dash air at first as you ran fan to bring in outside air. Roof air units are 100% recirculated air but you cleared it
up when you went to the names. Too bad they don't make the original DuoTherms that lasted 45 years. Mine still work so others will have to chime in.

Learn something new every day...or so. I thought the roof air used
outside air and cooled it.
That would explain why running the fan only didn't cool the coach. After
driving in the hot sun with no dash air, the coach is considerably hotter
than outside ambient.

I did a bunch of research and just bought an Atwood 15026.

Can't review it yet, because it's still in the garage.

I will have two used ACs available in a few week, in SE Michigan.

The Atwood has decent reviews and includes a heat pump.

I like the Atwood Air Commander 15kbtu as it is a heat pump, consumes less
energy, and is good for heat as well without the use of a resistance heat
strip.

Reading the few negative reviews with common cause probably stopped me from impulse buying it last summer. That, and the 45 year-old was still putting
condensation on the windows :)

This is why geography is an important input.
Our last of the Mohegan Carrier has a heat strip. I had great hopes. The fact is that it can really only maintain comfort down to about 40°. I
wanted a heat pump, but such was not available in an acceptable package height. That is OK I thought, as heatpumps pretty much go flat at about 40°
as there is no longer much heat in the air to pump out.

Then, apart from the heat strip burning out twice, it has also been a disappointment in the sensible heat it provides. The (first a borrowed) ceramic
heaters can do more warming on the same power because they are where you are....

For Bdub, being where he is, there is probably not much time below that 40°F that he needs, and that makes a heat pump a good bet. For those of us
in the cold north, not so much.
