A/C question

Hello All,
I'm preparing to install my new headliner, while adjusting the A/C unit to allow the headliner panel to be pre-fitted I noticed the "probe", I think
it's a temp probe? (I have attached a couple of photo links for your review).

My questions is, does this wire / probe need to be fixed to a specific location, or is having it hang inside the unit loose acceptable?

If it needs to be positioned or attached to a specific point please let me know?

Mike,

It is a little difficult to tell exactly what is going on in your pictures.

There often temperature sensors in the outlet air stream and at the evaporator. If that goes directly to a temperature control, then any place in the
air stream will work. If it goes back up to the roof top unit, it should be buried in the evaporator fins.

Thanks Matt, it is difficult to see but in the second link (image 2) the sensor comes from the box which is a temperature control.

When I removed the box I could see the sensor just hanging there in the air stream but I noticed the small metal screw connected to it and wondered if
it came loose.

This type of sensor will in some cases be seen attached to the intake side of the evaporator coil; in those cases I’ve found that it is typically controlling a refrigerant expansion valve.

Since yours is routed into an electrical box it is most likely just a thermostatic sensor.

I can't see much in the pics but if it's the sensor for the thermostat it should be in the Return air path. This way it samples the room air for the
thermostat. It is important that it does not contact the cold evaporator or you won't get much cooling as it will keep shutting off.

Like JM says,that is the temp sensor and should be in the intake area above the air filter.. it will sense the ambient temp for the TStat. Make sure
it is not in contact with any metal. it hangs in the air.
