If your stopped, and turning left. Always keep your front tires straight ahead. NEVER EVER EVER have those front tires pointing to the left. If your hit from the rear. You just might get hit by the big truck that's coming toward YOU. That's how that car ended up in Fred, and Diane's lane. I learned that when I was 13. My dad had his wheels straight ahead. And I'm alive today because of that. Bob Dunahugh

Bob,
You are absolutely right. I have had the same experience.

That was one of the many lessons the defensive driving classes we had several times a year drilled into us during the 14 years I drove a company
vehicle for a large utility. And if you are the oncoming vehicle to look at their front wheels to see if they have their wheels turned. To this day 35
years later I still look for those front wheels and if the car behind that one is stopping. Just my 2 cents.

That was what I thought when I first heard about the accident. When I took driver's training back in '63 to get my license, that too was one of the
first things we were taught. Keep the wheels straight when waiting to turn left.

However, in this case the car that hit the Dugger's GMC was "stopped waiting for a vehicle in front of him to make a left turn". I am assuming that
his wheels would have been pointed straight since he was going to continue eastbound.

These discussions are veruy a informative and good reminders for most of us
as I find myself doing things that are not in area line with what we were
taught at done time.
Being a VP of Tech for Western States , I'll need to make it a point to
focus on this area soon.
I thank all that are sharing things here here.

I'm not positive, but I think the account below is a bit in error. I believe the car that hit the GMC was the one waiting for the GMC to pass so the driver could turn left. That car was knocked into the path of the Dugger's GMC by the car that rammed it from behind at what was most likely considerable speed.

That is my understanding from what I read of the Arkansas State Police report.

The first report I read said:
"Arkansas State Police Trooper Jason Hutcheson said two people were killed in a Tuesday afternoon crash on US Highway 62 East involving a motor home,
but their names weren't released pending positive identification.
Hutcheson said 51-year-old Trevor McGehee of Mountain Home was eastbound on Highway 62 in a Chevrolet Cruse and was stopped waiting for a vehicle in
front of him to turn left onto Keeter Loop.
The driver of a Saturn car, a minor who wasn't identified, hit McGehee's vehicle from behind, forcing it into the path of a westbound motor home. The
impact of that crash spun McGehee's vehicle 180 degrees and it stopped about 275 feet from the crash, Hutcheson said.
The motor home left the roadway on the north side and went about 100 feet before it hit a mobile home and burst into flames. Hutcheson said two
occupants of the motor home were unable to escape and were killed."

I assumed that Arkansas State Police Trooper Jason Hutcheson knew what he was taking about, unless he was misquoted.

Then the "Preliminary Fatal Crash Summary" reads as follows:
"Initial Narrative V1 STRUCK V2 CAUSING IT TO CROSS THE CENTER LINE AND COLLIDE WITH V3. V3 EXITED THE ROADWAY ON THE NORTH SIDE AND STRUCK A
MOBILE HOME."

https://asp.arkansas.gov/fatal/index.php?do=view_reports&accident_number=91&year_rec=2019

No mention of a car stopped waiting to turn left. I am not sure that is conclusive if there was or was not a 4th vehicle involved. The report is only
"Preliminary".

We will probably have to wait for the final report to see if that reveals the existence or not of a 4th vehicle. Not that it matters anymore except
to Trevor McGehee, lawyers and insurance companies. Two of our friends are dead which is what matters.

These are the GPS coordinates of where the accident happened:
36.206347,-93.010795

Looking at the satellite image, it's a straight run of road, good visibility and it was a dry day. Guessing at wheel direction is pointless. Fred
was going straight in the opposite direction and did nothing wrong. The two kids in the car (inexperienced/distracted) that rear-ended the other car
and knocked it into Fred's lane are fully responsible. They'll have to live with that.

I'd had short conversations with Fred and Diane at prior GMCMI conventions. After Tallahassee I lent a hand packing the crates, worked alongside Fred
and Diane shared part of her life story over lunch that day. Just really super nice people, and it's a big loss for all of us.

There's probably already talk of memorializing them with a service or an award in their name at the next GMCMI convention. If not, I'd like to
propose it.

I see where you are coming from but this is the 1st reference I have seen implicating a 4th vehicle - I think it is an incorrect interpretation!
I still think the Mac Macdonald interpretation fits w/ earlier reports I have seen, heard, read!
Agreed 100% that this detail is minor compared to the loss we all feel.
Just trying to be sure details are right and well understood, so we all learn a valuable lesson/s.
Most important lesson so far, for me, is Bob D.’s - if stopped to turn left across oncoming traffic - be sure wheels are kept straight while stopped! Something we all probably learned many years ago - but may have dropped our guard over the years!!!
The other interesting point being discussed is fire sources vs fire containment- wonder how many have replaced rubber fuel lines w/ steel lines - like Bob D.

I wonder if the GMC even hit the saturn? There is no mention of that impact so maybe the GMC turned to avoid the saturn, a maneuver I have been questioning for a while now. I'm starting to think "Don't make avoidance maneuvers on the spur of the moment, know where you are going"

Also it does say the saturn was spun 180 degrees, so it was likely an offset hit and the direction of the wheels would make little difference. If it was a direct hit and the wheel were turned it wouldn't have spun 180, it would have just been pushed into the GMCs path

Quit trying to connect the chain of events. Once the vehicle positions are
established, look for the cause. We know what that is without doubt. An
inattentive driver failed to leave sufficient separation to prevent the
initial collision. Result? We have lost 2 friends due to no fault of their
own. Hopefully, they did not suffer. STOP STUPID DRIVERS.
