I am the extremely proud NEW owner of Gordon Wickstrom's '78 Royale.

Gordon did not represent his coach accurately.

IT IS IN FAR BETTER SHAPE THAN ONE COULD IMAGINE!

The interior is such that it could have left the factory last month.
Everything is either original or replaced with authentic original. The
exterior is near perfect . . . the factory spare tire cover appears new!

And, it comes with the most complete, meticulous logs I have ever seen on
any vehicle, or airplane.

It drives perfectly, the tires and bags are near new.

My schedule has been jammed so I have not been able to check out the
systems (gen, furnace, plumbing, etc.) that Gordon cautioned me that needed
attention, so I may be back to the list for your help going forward?

For now, I hope that someone can shoot me a photo of the door assembly for
the water heater?

The bottom latch (catch?) appears to hook around a (now missing) pin or rod
running horizontally across the bottom of the opening. Right now, there is
only the spring-loaded latch gizmo holding the door on. As there is so
little to tweak on this gem of a coach, I want even the slightest fix to be
accurate and authentic.

Can someone to tell me where to buy or how to fashion a secure mechanism
for the water heater door?

Regards,

Jay Honeycutt

Hello Jay,
I can appreciate your wanting to keep everything era accurate. But on some items it's not so important. You might even decide, in the future, to go
with a different water heater, air conditioners, seats, toilet, sinks, faucets, even memory foam mattress. Numbers matching is not so important on
our GMC's, but the adventure is.
Enjoy, and welcome!
Glad you got a good one!
Scott

The original cover is identical to the new.
If you want an original I will sell you one off my personal Royal and put
on a new one that is exact on my coach.
There are times some Mfg do not change parts.

Jay, through the decades I have been on this planet, it has been my
pleasure to own more hot rods, custom cars, and absolute restoration
Concours correct show cars. And a number of RV's as well, including a 1978
GMC Royale 26 ft. Coach. It is extensively modified mechanically as well as
cosmetically. Wouldn't be afraid to drive it anywhere we choose.
Absolutely the worst experience I have had with any car or other
vehicle is with the 1961 Cadillac Small roof coupe deVille, absolutely a 95
point + correct show car. Anytime we showed it at national events, all I
did was worry about something happening to it. It took all the fun out of
ownership. Trophy winners are great, but the applause is short lived.
By far, driving my GMC to Rallies, and interaction with my friends in
the GMC community, is very high on my enjoyment list, compared to worrying
if there were any dust on that huge long beautiful jet black hood.
My advice to anyone who owns a GMC Coach. Make sure that cosmetics is
waaayy down on the list of important stuff.
