76 rims

Here's an idea for someone's website. An often(?) asked question is how to
tell if you have radial rims. So, can someone with a digital camera take
some pictures of the markings on radial rims and post them someplace? If so,
then that info will be available for future reference.

76 = radial rims.

If it has radial tires on a 76, the rims are probably radial. But just to be
sure, jack up one, unbolt it and look on the inside. If you still are not
sure, take it to a tire shop and they will tell you. You will probably have to
clean the rim to find the markings.

The same thought occurred to me. If someone can email me pic's of the
"radial" markings - IIRC, there's more that one type, then I'll post them
along with pic's of the "non-radial" stamp(I know, it doesn't actually say
that, but the markings are different) from my old wheels.

Gary, I was told the 76 had radial or nonradial, depended on when it was
made. The radial wheel should be stamped on the inside with a circled "R"
or the word "radial". After checking mine I determined they were nonradial
and this of course forced me to get in on the recent GMCnet deal for Alcoa'
($1030 US delivered to my house UPS) as an aside: merry christmas honey.

Thanks Scott,

You might want to highlight the stamp with chalk or paint so it will show.
I had a dickens of a time with the Alcoa wheel recall page trying to get the
stampings to show up in a picture.

Dean,

several failures were reported here on the net. And, GM issued a warning
about using radials on non-radial wheels. FWIW, evidently the practice
among many GMCers in the distant past was to exchange wheels if they had a
tire problem. So, you can't count on all of your wheels being one way or
the other. Some could have been swapped.

My '73 had one tire with a slow leak, and I tried several times to find a
place on the tire or at the bead where it was leaking. I never found
anything. I then became aware of the radial/non-radial rim issue. What I
found then, once I knew where to look, was a leak in the rim in the area
where the center and the rim of the wheel are welded together. This was not
a major failure, just a slow leak, which showed up when I got the soapy
water on there just right. I don't know if a major failure would be likely
in that area of the wheel, but I imagine it's possible.
When we determined that my parents '73 had radial tires on non-radial
rims, we found some radial rims to use. When we removed the tires from the
non-radial rims, we found one tire had a tube inside, which I assume was put
in because of a leak that no one could fix. Another wheel must have been
cracked in the area I talked about above, because once we had the tire off,
we found that someone had welded around the entire rim. I assume that there
was some find of crack that they were trying to repair. The other four
appeared okay.
So, to answer your question, we never had a "rim-blew-up,
sent-us-into-the-weeds" failure, but we did have some "what-the-???" kind of
failures. And it was clear to us that the same was likely to happen again.
The bottom line was to put radial tires ONLY on radial rims.

a radial rim, is also stamped in the face of the wheel, near the lug nut
area, so you don't even have to remove the wheel to see it.

Scott, can you check this? I know the part number for the non-radial wheels
is stamped in the bolt circle, but I don't know about the radial rims.

I think Cinnabar had an article in GMCMN that said the non-radial wheels
were stamped on the outside and the radial wheels were stamped on the
inside. So Lanier, if your wheels have a stamp on the outside, you might
want to doublecheck the inside as you may have non-radial wheels.

AFAIK, Firestone's Accuride division was the only manufacturer.
