Hello folks!

This is my first post here. Thought I'd try to make it useful. Been
looking for a coach for awhile and thought I'd found a couple. Both were
'73s and I thought I remembered from the net that there was a recall on the
bogie pins, and thus the rest of the rear suspension.

After talking to Cinnabar (Wes Caughlin) for a couple hours I think I
finally got it straight on this topic. Anyone who knows better please let
me know, else maybe this ought to be on Gary Thurlow's fine checklist for
wannabes. Thanks, Gary :-)

The recall apparently was for the rear axle spindles, not bogie pins.
Of course changing out the axle spindles dominoed to the hubs, brakes,
swing arms and all. It is true though that GM offered an optional upgrade
on the bogie pins but it was not mandatory. Here's what I think I know:

Bogie pins were 1 1/4" on '73s, 1 1/2" later
Axle spindles were 1 7/8" on '73s, 2 1/4" later
Hub pilot had 4 notches on '73s, 8 notches later
Backing plate had 4 bolts on '73s, 8 bolts later
Same brake shoes on all models

Quick inspection procedure according to Wes C. is to measure across the
flats on the axle nuts: 1 1/16" on '73s, 1 1/4" later

The recall is still in effect and serviced by Cinnabar or affiliates.
Some unscrupulous dealers (Naw! Really!? ... yep) apparently sent in
claims and collected GM's reimbursement for coaches they never actually
fixed, so owner beware -- just because Cinnabar says your VIN # has been
serviced doesn't mean it has been. If you have a '73, you might want to
check it out yourself. Hope this helps someone -- might be me if someone
has better info.

Oh yeah, the failure mode was bent axle spindles. Bet that was
exciting!

Sorry if this is old news -- just what I think I know...

Tom, I don't believe I said otherwise, did I?

Paint me dense, I guess -- what does that phrase have to do with your comment
earlier. There was no recall on bogie pins on any model ever, according to
Cinnabar. Please elucidate! :-)

Don't forget to run those TZE (VIN) numbers by me as you search for the
Dream Coach, Steve.

Thanks, Dave. I'll remember -- seems the ones I've gotten so far, you
already had though. :-)

That database must be getting pretty well along!
