6 speed transmission

This was a discussion thread a very long time ago (I've been lurking for a
long time). Let me first report what I THINK I remember of the earlier
discussion:

The 6 speed, switch-pitch transmission (a version currently sold by Caspro)
is not a new invention. Was in some models of Toronado. Not a true 6
speed, but involves the torque converter (vanes switch their pitch, I
assume). One position is 'normal', the other is not (no torque
multiplication).

Does anyone out there have one in their GMC?
If not, has anyone driven a GMC with one?
Which are the 'switched' gears?

Caspro advertizes:
1) lower than normal first
2) first
3) lower than normal second
4) higher than normal second
5) lower than normal third
6) higher than normal third

Makes sense that 1, 3 & 5 are a set and 2, 4 & 6 go together - but which
set is the 'switched' one (no torque multiplication)?

Have 140k mi. on my 23' Birchhaven with original engine, trans, final
drive. Have been in situations when I thought I'd have to back down a hill
... simply not pulling enough revs to get into useful power range. Yes, a
final drive ratio change would help, but we're only talking a few percentage
change for the final drive right? What it feels like I need is another
(lower) gear - 'granny-gear'.

With 140k miles, I obviously need to contemplate some serious work to keep
the old girl goin'. Can't afford to spend money without reason (but sure
don't want to spend the money and still have to back down the damn hill!)

All comments appreciated..

do you have any idea what your transmission temp was for this long low
gear climb ??

Larry,
Where is the sensor mounted? Are you using a Digipanel or some other gauge?

My tranny guage showed about 155, it seems to run cool, but it does work. I
have an external cooler. I was watching it, however.
