50 amp cord

is it necessary to keep the 50 amp cord? do campgrounds provide this type of electrical service?
i was thinking of putting in a 30 amp cord instead. any thoughts

I have yet to use a 50 A service and have been staying in parks for 20 years. BUT if you want to use two (2)
airconditioners plus a microwave plus ??? you may need the 50 A. Aircoditioners use something less than 15 A
each. I shortened up my 50 A cord and put an adapter on it to a 30 A cord which is a lot easier to roll up
and store, but if needed I still have the 50 A.

I kept my 50amp cord BUT I shortened it to 8' (vs the original
which was 20-25 ft).

It now goes easily into the elec box and leaves me room for two 4 ft water
hoses, a 12' phone cord, a 12' tv cable, wheel chocks and all adaptors.

We find 50amp service at about half of the campgrounds we visit, and when
we do 99% of the time the 8' cable reaches the box and our 8' of
hose gets to water. Usually a pretty std setup.

Nice thing with 50amps is you can run everything all at once. 2 roof ac,
microwave, TV, toaster, coffee, whatever. No worry. With 30amp we only run 1
AC unless no other major appliances running.

We usually find if we need a longer cord, the service available is 30amp or
less.

Worked for us.

What kind of a coach do you have that you have a 50 amp service, or did you have
it modified? To the best of my knowledge mine is a 30 amp

Hi Wayne,
My 74 Painted Desert has a 50 amp cord. Its
about 20' long. Thats about 2'short in my
experience .

Dad's 76 Eleganza II is 30A. I was under the impression that all GM
finished(actually Gemini finished) coaches went to 30A during the 75
model year. Can't remember where I heard that tho'...

Guys

I knew something wasn't right in GMCville so I went out into the night and hunted
up my original owners manual (beginning with VIN #TZE165V100893) on page 30, it
says "Your MH's external power cord contains two 120-volt circuits, rated to carry
40 amperes total." and it goes on to tell about using the proper hookups. The 21
ft power cord says right on it 40 amps.

When a put in my new driveway extension for the coach, I put in conduit and wiring
for 30 amps and that was what I was planning on finishing tomorrow. Before I do
it, should I re-think this? I already have the 30 amp wire run thru the conduit,
but not hooked up on either end yet.

Your thoughts/experience will be appreciated.

I went and looked at my manual. It says the same as yours about
the two 120-volt circuits. In the breaker box I have 2 40 amp
breakers. That would be a total of 80 amps (40 amps for each leg
of the cable). I looked at the cable and couldn't see if it said
anything on the connector. I'm still pretty new to RV's so I
always assumed that the parks that could accept the GMC plug without
modification had 50 amp service. My 6,000 watt generator would be
rated at 50 amps (6000 watts divided by 120 volts = 50 amps).

So the plot thickens?

Wayne,

You've discovered GM's dirty little secret(or at least one of them).
They went with an 8ga cord, which is only good for 40A, but that's
plenty since each of the four circuits is 20A. The only "real" issue
here is the 31 ft. cord, which is not properly protected should a short
occur somewhere before the coach 20A breakers. True 50A service would
require a 6ga cord which would be even tougher to fold back into the
utility box.

I just did the same thing and, since a dual 30A circuit is plenty for
these coaches, I used 10/3 cable and a dual 30A breaker. Still used a
50A outlet inside a weatherproof box - probably would catch some flak
from the local building code people, but it's safe. The total run from
the breaker panel to the recepticle box is around 120ft. 8ga cable
would cost around $300 and a 250ft box of 10/3 was $60.

There was an article I read a number of years ago that explained the
conversion from a 50 amp to a 30 amp cord. It might be possible that
some PO performed this conversion. It was somewhat popular on the West
Coast.
