There is a 1972 OLDs 98 with 455 in the Phoenix, Arizona newspaper for
$450.00 Spoke to the gentlemen on Sunday, July 19th. The engine is in
the car
and you can drive it around the block to verify the engine's condition.
He
will sell the entire car for $450; engine and transmission for $450, or
sell
just the engine for $375. At this price it most likely will not last
long.

I think that is too much money, especially for a 72. I just bought a 72
Tornado in good running condition, except the final drive was noisy, for
$300 here in the San Diego area which tends to be high, just 6 weeks
ago. Needless to say, I not only got a good 455 4V but also the correct
transmission (with some mods required), final drive, CV joints and
steering knuckles which were all in great shape. The knuckles alone were
probably worth the $300 so you could say I got the rest for free. Three
weeks later I took the carcass to scrap disposal and to my surprise got
a $26 rebate on the whole transaction which covered my trailer rental.
I think you can do better and try to find a Tornado even if you have to
pay a few bucks more. The Tornado engine also had the windage trays in
the motor which most of the others except 442s don't have which are a
great mod for your GMC 455 saving gas creating a few more horses. The
going price around here for a complete motor (core) is $300. I have
bought them that way too but only with desirable heads such as the
"C". Steer clear of the "J" which they used on our GMC. That is the
worst breathing 455 head ever made. It is called the smog head or the
EGR head and has terrible exhaust breathing characteristics. You can
read all about it in the web site that was recently posted by Tom
Warner. This site was also posted some weeks ago in the "Hot Links"
message traffic on the list. I hope this 10 year old law is B.S. and
was this a Texas state law or a Federal mandate?
