Does anyone in Oregon, Washington, North California have a STANDARD SIZE
crank for a 455. O.K. if it needs polished, or turned .010" or less. Call
or email me if you can help.

Jim,

Did you know that there are Three Crankshafts for 455?
There is Cast Iron, used in most passcar applications.
Then there were Nodular Iron used in many performance cars and in some marine and apparently some motorhomes.
There are also some Forged Steel cranks that were supposed to go to the industrial and some went to motorhomes.

When I got my coach's engine open, it had a nodular crank, and of the two salvage engines, one was noodle (an engine builder joke) and the other was a
cast.

The Iron and Noodle can only be differentiated by an N on the front throw.

Matt - whose recent rebuild survived the incident.

Matt, there are at least 2 more. Crusader Marine specified a forged crank
for a 455 for their engines. I used to work on gill net fishing boats
equipped with them. Alas, all my examples have been ruined by exposure to
the dreaded SALT WATER associated with offshore fishing boats.
The final example was used in the actual HURST OLDSMOBILES that were
used in drag racing. They were precursors of "funny cars" and used some
really trick stuff. Among the speed parts were cast iron headers that
blocked off the center heat passage and divided the siamese center exhaust
port, solid lifter camshafts, all gear camshaft drives (no chains), deeper
oil pans with windage trays, main bearing girdles, and finally, billet
steel crankshafts, for manual transmissions. These pieces are long gone,
now. All in the hands of collectors or in junk piles.
The best we can hope for today is the modular iron cranks used in
motorhomes, agricultural applications, and some Mercruiser engines used in
jet boats.

If you select "spell check" and delete "autocorrect" those are far more satisfactory options. Spell check will challenge your spelling AND if you are sure you are correct with a new word, you can add it to your phone's dictionary!
