4 KW Onan in 1st coaches

I believe it was dependent on how many Air Conditioners were included in the
model at the time. A 4K is large enough to run 2 newer AC units but I don't
think it is enough to run 2 older AC units. Darren

tought it was. I thought all 26 foot coaches had the 6 KW onan.

My 73 was around the 500th off the line and came with the 4K Onan. I see it
as a plus because it almost doubles the size of the storage area next to the
generator.

In my search for a GMC I have seen a couple of early GMC 26 foot coaches
with 4 KW Onan's.. Was this standard on some early 26 ' coaches? The
owners assured me that the generator was original equipment. Does anyone
know.

Our 75 Palm Beach came with one roof A/C and a 6KW model Onan.

I believe that both generators were optional equipment. A base coach did
not come with one. I don't know if both generators were available for the
entire production run, but I imagine that the price difference between the
two was small in comparison to the total delivered price, and therefore the
6kw would likely be the more popular of the two options.

A 1977 brochure I have (dated 10/76) just lists the 6KW Onan and if I
recall, when we bought ours in 75, they had several on the lot all with
6KW's. This may jus the way this dealer ordered them, but I'm not certain of
that.

4K and 6k Onans and Kohlers were avilable options in 73 and 74 but the 6k
was only available on 26' models.

I have never ecountered a coach with a Kohler but the shop manual covers
both brands.

Correct, Patrick! But the 4k was only available in 73/74. You could order
a 4k on your 26' model but could not order a 6k on your 23' model.

Makes sense as the smaller rear compartments on a 23 probably aren't big
enough for a 6kw.

The coach I looked at in Franklin, TN had a Kohler. It was under a ton of
crap and took a while to find the plate so I could tell what it was.

When my neighbor's 23' and my 26' are side by side there are lots of
differences. The LP tank is quite a bit shorter on the 23'. The 4K seems
about 2/3 as wide as the 6K Onan. After a quarter of a century he still
would have it no other way. He loves the 23' GMC. Of course he has no
choice as the garage for his motorhome is only 25' deep and he's land locked
with respect to making it deeper.
