Marvin's a hell of a nice guy. He's retired from the oilfield equipment
business and used to build all of Red Adair's special fire fighting
equipment. He's got some great stories to tell at the Classic's Rallies.
I'm running one of his 3.46 final drives in my coach and am very happy with
it.
Bill:
I have heard two things (both unsubstantiated):
1. The first is that Marvin was quite ill and was no longer doing the
gears. I assume that this is false given the ad.
2. The units that he put together had some problems with being "noisy", and
were more difficult to install. Something about not being pre-shimmed (I
have never had my final drive apart, so my description may be quite
erroneous). This was early on in the game and may have been fixed. Any uses
have comments on this?
I believe that Cinnabar criticized his setup due to the gear size (or
something like that) but I suspect that this was a bit of competitive
slanging based on theory rather than on whether it stood up in the real
world.
Myths or reality?
