The real Corvair expert is Scott Woodward. It is my belief that an
automatic Corvair can be towed 4-on the ground because it has both a
front and a rear trans. pump, which keeps things lubed while being
towed. The early, 140 series, Volvos had a Borg-Warner auto trans.
that allowed the car to be push started, like
letting the clutch out on a std. trans... I'm starting to
ramble....the point being...they had two pumps as well.

Buy it !!!! A man can't have a car too fancy for trips to and from
the GMC parts store. And it can be towed too !!

Actually it's Scott Woodworth. I know a Scott Woodward from another
list. He's an engineer...

An automatic tranmissioned Corvair can be towed on all four wheels
due to the rear pump in the tranny that's driven by the output shaft.
Some sort of external cooler would be advisable though, because the
transmission will still generate a certain amount of heat while being
towed.

I installed an external cooler on my brother's 66 Corvair Monza. I
got a Corvair truck front pump from the junkyard and installed it in
place of the car pump. It has cooler fittings that the car doesn't.
The car relies solely on the torque converter cooling fins to cool the
fluid.

When you're towing the car, of course the torque converter isn't
rotating, so no cooling takes place. The external cooler could be
mounted under the car to the left of the heater box with a small fan to
draw air through it. The fan could receive power from the towing
vehicle.
