1/2 inch cordless impact wrench.

Incase anyone is living in the Stone Age and doesn't get out much (apparently me) this could be life changing...
I was helping out a fellow GMC'er with his CV shaft. He showed up with a 1/2 inch electric impact gun. I was expecting to use my 5 foot breaker bar to
break loose and retorque the axel nut. By jumping up and down on the end of the breaker bar.
DIDN'T need the breaker bar. These cordless impact wrenches are absolutely amazing!! Of course I had to go out and buy one the next day.
It turns a 3 hour job into a 1 hour job. And soo much easier on the body.......if the engineers keep putting out these amazing products, there's no
reason we can't keep working on these coaches well into our 90's!, I'm not feeling a lot of excitement out there!
No more breaker bars, no more pneumatic guns, no more tripping over air hoses....... I still use the torque wrench for final small adjustments. But
now I need a torque wrench that goes to at least 250 foot pounds.
Get a cordless impact wrench and save your back..

If, like me you're a cheapskate, buy the Freight, Harbor corded one for 39.95. Worth it the first time you change a tire or even take a wheel off.
First one lasted 3 years. Second oen is going strong. First one sheared a ball in the anvil, when I get enthusiastic I'll fix it.
Carry a 25' extension cord, and your Onan will run it to change a tire by the roadside.

I bought a "Klutch" branded battery version from Northern Tool several years ago. Have only used it a couple of times, but it's a dandy. Got one of theirs for compressed air as well.

I bought one of those HF 39.95 jobs SEVERAL years ago, figuring a tire
rotation or two would pay for it. For probably 5 years, I let everyone use
it at Bean Station. Finally, I tried to remove a TIGHT front axle nut with
it. After hammering for 5+ minutes, probably, the output shaft gave up. I
used the retainer ball from that to repair a Craftsman Industrial I'd
bought in a pawn shop many years before but never used because the sockets
wouldn't stay on. The replacement HF gets to ride around in the GMC all
the time while I use the Craftsman.

Speaking of GMC OEM front axle nuts: Does anyone know a source, part
number, or diameter & pitch for them? Got a friend who needs one bad -- he
should have 4 but can find only one to fill a pressing need for 2.

I've got a corded Makita 3/4" drive I carry in the SOmine( Eagle Bus). I use it to R&R wheels-525 off, 475 on. Lots of twist.

I have used pneumatic impact wrenches for 40 years at least. The very first
time I used a corded electric impact, it was in a 2 bay service station
with damp concrete floors. I was sitting on my butt on that damp concrete
rotating tires and wheels on a customers car. When I pulled the trigger, it
lit me up. I threw it across the shop and got out the 4 way. I have not
used a corded impact since that day.
The next time I used an electric impact, it was cordless. It belonged
to Todd Sullivan. 3/8" drive, green in color. Battery operated. It was
amazing. I went out and bought a yellow 40 volt cordless one. It too is
impressive. Holds a charge really well. My oh my, things have changed in
that arena.
But, if you are really serious about getting something like GMC axle nuts
loose, use a 3/4" drive pneumatic impact. It will get ANYTHING loose. Might
twist it off, but it WILL COME APART.

bought a milwaulkee 18v after using my friend's dewalt. it has outperformed the air impact I have.

Now I also have a M12 3/8" ratchet. I bought that when I started my engine swap, and I know it paid for itself 3 times over in time savings on that
job.

I use a 1/2 inch drive breaker bar and 1/2 inch torque wrench along with a
Ridgid 1/4 inch impact driver, it is mostly for screws but is rated up to
180-foot-pounds and run lugnut on and off well. I do not have an impact
socket and feel the breaker bars works to get them started. I need to
torque them anyway so using my woodworking tool for an impact wrench makes
cents for me. The GMC is about all I work on. $100 at home depot with 4AH
18 volt battery, charger, and bag. I have had it for years so why not use
what you already have.
