We are deeply saddened to share that our beloved Past President of GMCMI, JR Slaten, passed away on the morning of September 13th.

JR was a cherished member of our community, having attended nearly every GMCMI convention over the past four decades. Just last week, he was with us in Traverse City—his presence, as always, brought joy, laughter, and a sense of continuity that only he could provide.

For those who knew JR, you’ll remember the running joke: he celebrated his birthday every single day—claiming some 29,500 of them. It was a lighthearted tradition that perfectly captured his playful spirit and the warmth he shared with everyone he met.

Our hearts go out to his family, and especially to his devoted wife of many decades, Jeanne Slaten. JR’s sharp wit, kind heart, and unmistakable southern drawl will be deeply missed.

At this time, we do not have details regarding an obituary or memorial service, but we will share any updates as soon as they become available.

His wife Jeanne just posted this to Facebook...

Most of you have heard our heartbreaking news about the passing of my beloved husband of over sixty years, JR Slaten. He, more than anyone, would be overwhelmed with gratitude for the outpouring of love and prayers from all who knew him and continue to care about me and my family. Like everyone, we are dealing with the shock of loosing him. I hope you understand how much we want to celebrate this amazing life we shared both as a couple and as a family.

JR was an unconventional man who never met a stranger. He was very specific about having a party instead of a traditional funeral. Those who knew him well would swear he wanted a Birthday party, as he celebrated his birthday daily! With our children I will be planning a celebration of his life at a later date. I’m just not ready to celebrate yet, so bear with our family as we take time to grieve the loss of an incredible man, father, and the love of my life. I will update everyone when the kids and I make a decision.

Thanks for posting that, Jared. Much appreciated.

JR would love the idea of a birthday party celebration for him. He was a fixture at Bean Station and often visited with the Samsels. The day I met him he got me the newbie that it was his birthday that day. I actually bought him a present. We laughed pretty good at my gullibility. 🤷🏻‍♂️

He definitely was one of a kind.

Happy birthday, JR!
