Maine
Hello I just joined today. Am looking for a 23' GMC in decent shape in New England. Prefer Northern NE but can travel to S. NE or upstate NY if the coach can make it back to Maine on its own steam. Have a couple general repair shops near me for the basics. In winter I hope to tour the Southern states, visiting the various GMC repair shops there for the propietary stuff. Depending on the pandemic I suppose. Am getting too old and arthritic to take many more Maine winters but do have a 3-season home here. My name is Joe. Thank you

Hey Joe, who did you work with on your GMC Nor'easters membership? Actually owning one is supposed to be a prerequisite to joining, but frankly the officers in the club will be willing to help you out even without joining -- that's how I found mine after searching unsuccessfully for six months. I'm not aware of anyone in the club selling a 23, but I've only been a member for a year.

Not sure I understand the question, I joined here for what sounds like the same reason as you say... been looking for a small motorhome for a while, looked at a couple 26' gmc's in person, while they seemed nice were too big for what I need. So am looking for a 23. Digging around online i found this site and saw a locked or private Northeast subforum, thought it might point me to some leads as wasn't having much luck with other online sources. I think you pm'd me about that?? I never said i owned one of these. Lots of 26s for sale in New England, not many 23's at present. Would also be interested in a different brand of class a, like a travco, if was under 23' and in decent shape nearby. thank you

Okay, I understand now. I thought you were saying that you had joined the GMC Nor'easters club (gmcnoreasters.org). The subforum here is for club members only. Sorry about the misunderstanding. I have asked the club officers if they know of any 23s for sale in the region.

Jojo,
Before you get too locked into a 23, did you know that they were only 11% of the total build and that the older ones (73&4) have a very special set of problems of their very own? While these can all be accommodated, I will caution you that this may seriously limit your possible candidates.
Please read the sigfile.....

Thank you. I am aware of the inferior bogie bushings in the early models. Is it possible to upgrade them to the later spec? Any other early model shortcomings i should look out for?

Jojo,

The bogie bushings are a small problem as the wear level is easily determined. The big issue is that the early coach's lower control arms were not up to the task. There was a service bulletin to do a reinforcement, that many got. Mine had it and still failed at 170k. That made for a very bad day. There was also a SB for the rear brakes and bearings, most got this and it is easy to identify. And, the cab HVAC is not the best. By varying degrees it gets better toward 78. There is nothing here that cannot be accommodated, but none of it is free.

If you find something and are serious about it come back here with all the information that you can gather. There is a better than even chance that between here and GMCnet someone will know something about the coach and the PO. We are a kind of tight community.

There are not very many early 23s out there, the later 23s upfit by other companies were more popular. Start now by making contact with the GMC Noreasters when time permits. Things will be strange until this plague is handled, but that should end with the next election.

Matt
