When we first got the elephant, the wipers would do exactly the same thing..
I picked up a can of automotive contact cleaner set up the red pipe and gave it blast of the good stuff.. Instantly - the red pipe disappeared into the top of the wiper lever in the dash.. I looked around, no sign of red pip, so I blasted some more contact cleaner in to the lever and started hunting around for red pipe.. No sign of the pipe - but - wipers haven't cycled since and when I tested them later - they still work..
My guess is that the cleaner cleared up some crap on the wiper lever - however, the red pipe from the can might be doing something useful in there too..
