Wheel Covers Squeak

The GMC Net seems to be slow today.

I have a question. My original GMC wheel covers squeak a lot. It's so
bad that I've had people come up to me to tell me they think I have a
bad wheel bearing. The original owner said he gave up trying to fix the
constant squeaking. I'm kind of embarrassed to drive it around with all
the racket it makes.

I've tried bending the wheel cover tabs, I've put masking tape and 200
MPH duct tape on the wheels where the wheel cover tabs engage. A slight
improvement. One wheel stopped squeaking after its wheel cover fell
off! I'm considering doing the following:

1) Get rid of the wheel covers completely, paint the wheels white and
get new chrome lug nuts. My crazy neighbor George did that with his
Orange '73 Canyon Lands (he painted his wheels black) and it looks good.

2) Get Alcoa Wheels and new tires (can't really justify that expense yet
and the tires are only 2 years old).

3) Get ear plugs and figure that anyone who's staring at us while we're
moving is just admiring the old girl.

Does anyone have an idea of what I can do?

Thanks,

If you decide to 'pitch' those covers, I would be interest in one for my
spare. I don't think it would squeak too bad used that way.... ;-)

Lanier:
Where did you get the rings and covers? Sounds like a good idea. Did yours
squeak too?

Richard

If you do decide to get rid of your original wheel covers let me know

Thom wants one and I could use the rest

Gee! That's not the answer I had hoped to hear from the group. Oh well if it
comes to that, I'll keep you in mind.

Richard
My father owned a 1958 Cadillac, with very squeaky hubcaps, my neighbor
was the parts manager for the local Cadillac dealer, I told him about
the problem, he furnished Dad with a set of rubber bands which went
around the gripper portion of the hubcaps, this actually worked, but
the life of the rubber bands is not forever.

Now wait just a cotton pickin' minute here! I'll have you know I was
born in 1955 and when the first GMC's hit the showrooms, I was too busy
trying to keep my hot-rodded 70 Camaro together to notice! :o)

I've been curious about an ad in the GMCMM from Danny Dunn in TN that
offers "Aluminum Look-a-Like Wheel Covers" made of ABS plastic. Says
they "quiet and improve the look of the coach". Sounds like the covers
Rick has, does anyone else have any experience with them, or with Dann
Dunn? Price in ad was $149.95 plus shipping. (901) 755-7863

Like some others, the tires on my coach are too new to throw away just
yet, even though I'd like to get non-recalled Alcoas. These covers sound
like a decent quick fix.

BTW Richard, I would characterize the noise my wheel covers make as more
of a "tic-tic-tic" as opposed to a "squeak". I wonder if we do have the
same problem?

We have them, and they seem much better than the stainless ones, that we
replaced, Well we did,nt replace them the stainless ones they keep looking for
new home off the road, most of the time when ever they wanted to.
The ABS ones stay on the wheels, and hold the finish better.
no noise and they stay put....
