What rear bed setup is this?

It's called the "side-facing settee" in the official floor plans. As Jared said, they fold together into a double bed.

You are seeing it with the backs of the settees folded up. They fold over each other to fill in the space between the seats.

So that was normal in '73? Interesting.
Neither my '75 nor my '76 work like that. The bases slide inward to meet up and the backs just flop back. Same mechanism as the dinette.

I can't say what was normal--my coach was completely non-standard back there. Well, completely non-existent might be more accurate. I'm just looking at, and maybe misinterpreting, the mechanism in the OP's photo.

The side facing "flip-flop" settee was very common and it wasn't such a poor performer either. Mary is more sensitive, but I had more that a few good nights on those. A memory foam overlay is nice too.
We are both heavier now, so I put a piece of 1-1/2 Al angle neat the doorway. The back edge is supported.
Oh, Yeah - The rivets get loose too.

That's what I was expecting too, couldn't figure out if that was some sort of bunk bed arrangement lol

IIRC, they didn't have the dinette mechanism I'm used to at the dinette in '73 either. Maybe they rolled out the mechanized dinette and the rear settee that's similar at the same time? Perhaps in '74 or '75? It looks like the bases in the back of that '73 might be fixed, and the backs flip-flop over to the middle and come together. Looks like there's some lengthy linkages on them, so that would make sense.

Could be, I know the early ones had plywood dinettes with loose, covered cushions similar to typical campers including new ones. I actually kind of like that about the early ones.

There were three different interior designs.
73-74 were GM designed but made by Gemini and so often referred to as GMC-Genimi coached. All ply wood and no fancy mechanics. To make a bed out of the dinette one simply let the table down on to waiting cleats and then rearranged the cushions.
75-76 were GM manufactured, almost no plywood left mostly particle board. They bought the dinette set from another fabricator.
77-78 Was much like before, but better woodwork for the cabinet faces and some of the folding/bending furniture was actual early Flexsteel.
